Hello to all the fellow Nepalese. We have encountered a serious situation here. One of our friend is in critical stage and has been in ICU for past two weeks now. The doctors have been unable to diagnose the disease but they suspect that it could be some serious kind of tropical disease as he had been to Nepal last summer. He was taken to nearest hospital when he was sick (that was the best option for us because of the distance and nature of case). But since that hospital is small and doesn't have enough resources we are planning to transfer him to a better hospital. We would like to get any form of suggestions regarding that. Right now my friend is in a hospital in New Jersey. Also we are having problems with the insurance company. According to US law any emergency cases must be treated, however the hospitals can reject a case if the case is a transfer one (which applies to our case) based on insurance claims. So if you also have any form of suggestions we would really appreciate it. This is a serious case and we have expectation that we would be guided in a proper way by our Nepalese friends. I will be communicating with you guys via this thread. Thanks to all in advance.

"The doctors have been unable to diagnose the disease but they suspect that it could be some serious kind of tropical disease as he had been to Nepal last summer." oh yeah americans doctors blaming Nepal now. WTF! first they can't even diagnose what kind of disease,....!! i wonder what kind of education they received there??? When your friend was in Nepal he was fine. It's only after he was in USA he became sick. what does this shows. Anyway what is your friends ethnicity? i suggest you call dami or Jankgri ba. it could be kul dewta, jungleli spirits. some ethnicity praticed shaminism, and this could be a link to doctors not finding what was the problem. skh

that's interesting. what kind of insurance is your friend under - university, private, etc? as far as I know (from my insurance company's policies), they treat both emergency and chronic diseases if the disease/disorder was diagnosed overseas. even if the case is then transferred to US, they take responsibility of it. however, if outside US, they pay only 50% of the charge but inside, they pay 80%. if the disorder is very acute (like requiring brain surgery, heart surgery, critical organ transplantation), it is free. BTW, this health plan I'm under is the one provided by my university. I don't know if that was helpful. You might also want to take help of a lawyer if needed.

syd_acid, I think if you go to any hospital under ER case they should be able to help you.. I suggest that you tackle one problem at a time do not worry about insurance company, you can later check with them and I believe even the judicial system should be able to help you in such cases. Seek for a good lawyer in your free time to claim from insurance company. Saving life is the important part rather than financial part. Good Luck P.S. SKH... I think you have a serious problem dude. You need to get yourself checked out.

xx-nepal what is the problem with you man. i'm assuming why doctors couldn't treat his illnesses. Can't i ask this? But because we assume that western medicine and science is so advanced, we cannot just lay back and forget about our practices. Remember now that in Nepal, there are many ethnic groups who practices shamanism. Now shamansim is the practice of worshiping ancestors (Sumnima/Paruhang), and nature. This is no JOKE my friend! In shaminism a person could be seriously ill because of Kul dewta, bon dewta and jungleli spirits.whether you believe or NOT but i do believe in this. i became ill too many a times but doctors couldn't diagnose it especially when i go to my mountain village home. I don't know if other people here in sajha know about this too. But please share with us regarding shaminism and rituals and practices if you have knowledge about it. That's why dami or Jankgri ba still exist in Nepal because our tradition rituals and practices cannot be eradicated.
that's what i was saying and i do not know why you start calling me names!!! skh

- Who is the insurance provider? (United health, blue cross etc)
- What type of insurance/plan does the patient have ?
- Which hospital is your friend in New Jersey and to which hospital are you trying to transfer to?
Hospitals cannot reject referrals, if the current hospital is unable to diagnose the illness they should refer the patient to the nearest hospital they believe has the specialists/ facility to do so.
