I was reading the vituperative blog of our dear Paramendraji. I love the man because he throws dirt at everybody but me:) and he is a true disciple of our pugnacious TVman Bill Oreilly.

Anyway, I was reading his blog to enjoy one more round of curses/complaint/selfaggrandization of our dear old friend Paramendra, and I was thinking, 'here you go, he is cursing home minister once again'. But no this Sitaula he is cursing is fat and big and I have some drishtidosh, but I wouldn't characterize the homeminister sitaula as big and fat. Finally, looked at the name, and it is not krishna sitaula, but kiran sitaula. Poor man.

Way to go paramendraji. His list of target includes janajati, kbrana, alok bohara, king, dying girija, murderous maoists, recalcitrant madhesis, kiran sitaula, krishna sitaula, sucheta pyakurel, pahade bahuns, budhanilakantha school's former classmates etc. I don't know about his political career (madhesi might enjoy hear his pugnacious comments, but when it is time to become minister, rhidayesh tripathi is ready to kill a thousand fellow madhesi !), but his talk show in TV is bound to be successful overnight.

Kantipur TV, give him a talk show. We want a new form of entertainment in Nepal. Forget Pawankali, here comes bishkali Paramendra.

तेस्तै सिटौलाको राजिनामा भनेर किचकिच गर्नु भन्दा 'आइजा झापामा अनि देख्लास, कसरी भोट ल्याउलास हामी पनि हेरमला' भनेपछि सिटौलाको सातो जादैन र भन्या? बच्चा जस्तो राजिनामा दे नत्र बार्ता गर्दैनम किन भन्न परेको?

मधेसीले दुख पाउनमा धेरै हदसम्म मधेसी नेतृत्वपनि जिम्मेवार छ। अब माग हेर्नुस न, 'हिन्दीलाई राष्ट्र भाषा बना' रे। त्यस्तो मागले मधेसीलाई फायर अप गर्छ? 'मैथिलि लाई राष्ट्र भाषा बना', 'भोजपुरि लाई बना', 'अवधीलाई बना', 'थारुलाई बना' भने पो। अब अमेरिकामा हिन्दिलाई राष्ट्रभाषा बना भनेर आन्दोलन गर्‍यो भने के बंगाली, नेपाली हरु फायर अप हुन्छन र भन्या? अब मेरो मधेसी एउटा ठुलाबडा साथीले भन्छ कि 'हिन्दिले मधेसी लाई कनेक्ट गर्छ'रे। गर्छ खुब। मैथिलि बाट हिन्दि र नेपालि भाषाको दुरि बराबर छैन? भोजपुरिबाट पनि त्यहि हैन? कति फरक छ र हिन्दि र नेपाली नै? जसलाई आफ्नै मातृभाषाको माया छैन तिनले कसरी सफल राजनीति गर्न सक्छन? गज्जुबाबुको पार्टी फेल खाकै कारण त्यहि हो, मैथिली वा भोजपुरि को सट्टा हिन्दि कसलाइ खुशी पार्न माग्या हो? अब ह्याँ नेपालगञ्ज मा मधेसीलाई लुट्दा पुलिसले हासेको भिडियो कु कुरो आ'छ। मैले पनि हेरें, एकदम शेमफुल छ। तर नेपालगञ्जमा त्यो काण्ड हुदा सत्तामा सद्भावना थियो कि थिएन? सत्तारुढ पार्टीको रुपमा उसको जिम्मेवारी हुन्छ कि हुदैन? केहि शब्द बोल्यो? बिरोध गर्‍यो? राजीनामा दिन्छु, राम्ररी छानबीन नगर्ने हो भने भनेको भए सिरियसले सबैले लिन्थे, हैन? आफुले सत्ता पाए सम्म मधेसीले दुख पाउन या सुख पाउन, नागरिकता पाउन या नपाउन यिनलाई मतलब छैन। यि सबै आफै छोटे राजा हरु हो, आफुले नै गाउँमा तल्लो जातको लाई दबाएर खाने गरेको हरु हो।

Though he considers himself a loktantrik and all that, he has this "sundar shanta bishal" Panchayati image of Nepal.

That image was good for RNAC posters and Mahendra Mala books. But the reality was and is different

Now that we have slipped, people like Rahul Vai rush to pretend that the floor was not icy after all, and that it's the fault of some other people!

But now that -- with these andolans -- the shit has hit the fan, the straightforward questions are:

1) Do we still deny reality, and preach the songs of some la-la national brotherhood and hope that the problems will somehow go away, only to engulf the whole country and tear it to pieces?

OR

2) Do we take a cold hard brutal look at how we all are, and take confidence-building, trust-building, step-by-step measures to address the grievances of so many Nepalis under a democratically framed rule-of-law-regime?

As a pahadiya bahun who does not fancy the prospects of Nepal going the Yugoslavia way, I choose the SECOND option (knowing fully well that it's a much harder but better option).

That is why, I, for one, yearn for groups of statesmen and stateswomen to emerge in Nepal in
this hour . . . from any walk of life.

As a matter of fact, every Nepali who lives outside the inner Kathmandu valley has been discriminated one way or another throughout the history of Nepal. Sadly even among those who are the victims of discriminations, there are internal discriminations within themselves."

It's early morning where I am.
I haven't had my coffee yet . . . so I am a bit groggy.

But even with groggy eyes, I can tell that your constant self-referenced "अंग्रेजी न जानेको" kura sounds both dishonest and manipulative, considering that you are in the US in some PhD program (at Drew or Drexel University in Pennsylvania).

Unless you are writing your thesis in Nepali bhasa (by telling your professor that you do not know English), let's be real yaar.

What's with this constant references to your English abilities?
What do you hope to achieve by them?

It's fine if you love to post in Nepali bhasa.
It's also fine if you dislike others who write/post in English.

But don't show this false modesty re: "अंग्रेजी न जानेको" kura and then expect sympathies. Else, without intending to be such, you come across as one of those smooth-talking communist netas who use mitho, seductive and flowing Nepali bhasa to screw uneducated/illiterate Nepalis in villages.

That's not what you are, are you?

I, for one, ENJOY communicating in both Nepali and English bhasa,
and do NOT consider others' proficiency or lack of fluency in either of those bhasa as a sign of anything. People's language abilities just mean that they people are different, and that's that. Who says knowing one bhasa over the other is a sign of punditry? Don't stir controversies where there are none.

Meantime, read another article by another -- in my opinion -- sensible Madhesi. All these sensible, middle-of-the-road Madhesis cannot be telling lies and acting as agents of reactionary forces, can they?

Nepali too
Community identity doesn't preclude belonging

This is not a saga of victimhood. To think of it in those terms would be an inaccurate representation of my life. I was born into an upper-class Kathmandu family. My parents are well ensconced in the capital's professional and social circuit. I went to good schools here, moved to India for higher education, got a job in Delhi with a Nepal-based magazine, and have rarely been made to feel like an outsider, at least publicly.

But things are never quite that simple. My forefathers on both sides are from Bihar, where we still have deep family links. My paternal grandfather settled in Rajbiraj, became a Nepali citizen six decades ago, and made the great leap to Kathmandu as it was getting out of the Rana rut in the 50s. I speak a mix of Hindi, English, and Maithili at home, in that order. My spoken Nepali is heavily interspersed with English and Hindi words. Reading the national language is a struggle and I don't plan to attempt writing in it anytime soon.

Language is a more substantive marker of distinction than we often acknowledge. In school, anticipating the move to India for further education, I opted for Hindi over Nepali. In class six, the significance of that hit home. While eating lunch, a friend said, in a mix of seriousness and jest, "You are a dhoti". When I discovered that the term—definitely derogatory—was associated with madhesis, who in turn were equated with Indians, I tried hard to run away from my identity. I hung around with Kathmandu kids, called the other Indians in school 'dhoti', and rationalised studying Hindi by saying it was what my parents wanted.

But I couldn't run too far. The differences were too many: we went vegetarian during Dushera as Kathmandu feasted on meat; we didn't do tika; Tihar was the one-day Diwali for me. My father, short and on the darker side, made it a point to wear kurta-pyjama. It was a dress I took to later and that, with the accented Nepali and the surname, often provoked the remark that we don't look Nepali.

Telling people constantly that you are indeed a Nepali citizen is not pleasant.

It's taken me time to come to terms with my identity. My liberal education and understanding of how the homogenising tendency works in society, and a sense of security, no doubt helped by the present political discourse of inclusiveness, allows me to be candid about my background. It gives me the confidence to give the brush off to those who question my 'Nepaliness'. In the last few years, I have reported occasionally on Nepal politics, which also gives me an added sense of citizenship and belonging.

My story is not representative. My family migrated from south of the border, while others' ancestors have been in the tarai for centuries. I was comfortable in English, the language of power, and moved out, which together allowed me to escape the handicap of not being Nepali enough for the self-appointed guardians of nationalism in the Valley. Besides some taunts and subtle insinuations, I was never deprived of opportunity.

But spare a thought for the person who speaks only Maithili, Awadhi, Bhojpuri or, at best, Hindi, who lives, in the tarai, with the stigma of not 'being Nepali', has cultural practices distinct from the mid-hill mainstream, does not have access to the power structure, has memories of being mercilessly exploited through history, and whose identity brings discrimination and deprivation even today. Don't blame them for being alienated from the system.

Understand the anger. Empathise with the bitterness.

A few weeks ago, a columnist in these pages, in a style reminiscent of national integration Panchayat textbooks, carped against the 'divisiveness' sparked by politicians, and asserted that he was a 'Nepali first'. Whatever that means. How about creating conditions for those down south to have the comfort of saying that?

The concept of "sundar shanta bishal" is NOT the Panchayati image of Nepal. Nepalese people have the freedom to dream "sundar shanta bishal" Nepal. Don't try to dismiss it by relating it to the Panchayati image. Or, are you trying to say to have a sense of patriotism is Panchayati by nature? How blasphemous of you to portray it to be good only for RNAC posters and Mahendra Mala books?

Yes, there are realities. Harsh realities. But amidst all those realities, there is another reality- love and dream of a properrous nation. Face this, whether you like it or not.

I will definitely choose your second option, as you did. But you don't have to twist the concept of national brotherhood. You don't necessarily have to mock that feeling.

I think many of us have already agreed that the issues of social injustice, discrimination have to be addressed by the nation. No need to repeat that again, and again, and again; and again; to push this thread to the height of boredom.

That's that.

Are you ashu in a different nick? Well, if someone claims something in a seemingly well-versed manner giving suggestions to us about what we should do and what we shouldn't, one should be able to defend himself/herself right?

I was just pointing out the contradictions...

To hit the nail on the head first, we don't care whether your "groggy"ness is due to lack of caffeine or cocaine. We don't give a hoot about your personal details.
Not only that, we also don't need to be explained what and where rahulvai is pursuing his doctorate degree.

Why why why? Why is this significant here. You again twisted rahulvai's opinion. He never said he is English illiterate. Pursuing a doctorate degree doesn't demand a sharp precison of English that you seem to have.

Thanks for posting Prashant Jha's article. I doubt if you noticed something different here in his article than what other Natwarlaals bark. Prashant proves that you don't necessarily have to abuse "Pahadi Bahuns" to justify what you have to say. Also, he is generous enough to say his story is not representative.Please note that carefully.

He says it all in these sentences:
"Understand the anger. Empathise with the bitterness. "

Here are my cents or paisa whatever:

1. This debate is a close to the question,"is burning flag free speech?", and vast majority of americans think it's a crime while high court disagree.

2.While you're thinking as court and rest as americans in this issue.

3.But believe me or not, patriotism does good to the country whether it is based on true or false pretence (USA is good example).

4.People often feel- does it make sense to give damn about free speech if there is no nation or nationalism?

5. We all know thin ice is there and must be resolved but to insult the nation as whole even before serious issues are debated proves that so called these leadership have already made up their mind, where they belong?

6. What people here (with diversity) wanted to point out was emotional side of patriotism whether he is well informed or not, it really doesn't matter but does country good.

7. Should we give high regard to someone's personal freedom at the expense of nation? Loktantra comes only after Desh not vice versa. Thank god we can still extend this thread up.

8.Remember free speech is not absolute,it is suspendable sometimes in the interest of nation (Ex. FDR) and hatred free speech? it is quelled often.

9.Spreading hate about particular race ethnicity is the main issue here- crime in most countries.Under development, discrimination issues are valid,so why not say these kathmanduwale,sarkarwale instead of race based slogan like khas or pahade?

10.Using term madesh, madhesi may be the starting point, to conincide with our popular slang (sadly) "madeshe dhoti",otherwise most only knew that part of Nepal as "terai" and "teraibashi" (damn textbook).

11.Hatred towards dark hindi speaking people is there, but unknowingly, assumming, they're from india,not race hatred but hate toward different countrymen (we call white "quire", "bander" etc,british -french,canadian - american fued etc.) but these leaders wanna be are pouring hatred towards pahade knowingly that they are from nepal not china. Intention is needed in order it to be a hate crime.

12.No matter how you try to bring people together knowing the reality, if hate is in heart, yugoslavia will be today's yugoslavia, you cannot change that outcome. But if hate is not there, merely the issue of self rule, the outcome can be similar to canada.

12.To kill the seed of hate is being realistic not idealistic these days.Everybody now wish if Hitler was never there ( going little too far here).

13.Sad but true, free speech sounds good and flourish only when the country is stable and as a whole.High court would have made decision otherwise.

14. And spammer? why we needed law to punish them if it was just free speech? isn't porn free speech too? Most people feel Mr. Bhagat's emails full of hatred as filthy as porn, that's all.Othrwise he can be negleted without any remorse like you said.

15.Bringing childhood bullying and hatred as an example is itself somehow childish. Sadly, it happens all over the world not only in Nepal.That may why we consider adult only after 18.I hardly seen that when everyone is in college- a point where people from all over Nepal meet together.
