Emeryville is very small town right across San Francisco. I think it is hard to find apartment in the town, and also the housing is expensive over there..
However Oakland, Berkely and El Cherrito is near Emeryvilla where rent is not that expensive and finding apartment is not that hard.

If I were in your position I would not live in Oakland. I think I would look for housing around Berkely, Hayward, Union City or Fremont. Fremont might be far but I like that town more then Hayward or Union City.

Apartment cost: 1 bedroom (Roughly)
El Cherrito: Starting $ 800+
Oakland $ 700 + (beware of the crime area)
Emeryville: $ $1000 +
Berkely: $800 +
Hayward: $ 750+
Union City: $ 750+
Fremont: $800+

Also traffic is horrible in highway 80, 880 and 680. Emeryville is right inbetween this highways.
