LUCKNOW: India has been worried in the past about China and Pakistan redrawing its map. Now it is the Maoists of Nepal.
The Maoists, though, have been more blase and bombastic than both China and Nepal. They have included in a map of "Greater Nepal" the whole of Varanasi, Ballia, Bahraich, Pilibhit and Jaunpur ? all large towns and districts in UP.
This, after their supreme leader Prachanda claimed in a recent interview with TOI that Greater Nepal was a "media-created stunt." Indian authorities are not happy with this development. Maoists have not only circulated calendars ? for 2005 ? and posters in Nepal depicting this, but backed it up with voluminous compilations. They, in fact, have brought out a book called Nepal: Teesta Dekhi Satlej Samma (Nepal: From Teesta to the Sutlej) to refurbish their claim.
According to a source, this book is readily available in Maoist camps .
The book talks about the Nepal-East India Company Treaty (1801) and the memorandum of agreement on Gorkha soldiers and their status that was signed by the UK, India and Nepal in Kathmandu.
