Nepal one of most corrupt nations: TI

Transparency International (TI), an international corruption watchdog, has listed Nepal among the countries having high rate of corruption.

In its Annual Report-2004 published on Friday, the TI put Nepal in the list of 60 most corrupt nations worldwide that scored less than 3 points out of 10. The report of the London-based corruption watchdog is based on an extensive survey carried out in the 146 countries.

Nepal scored 2.8 points, indicating high rate of corruption while Bangladesh, Haiti, Nigeria, Chad, Myanmar, and Paraguay topped the corruption list. Finland is shown in the report as the least corrupt nation with 9.7 points while Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore are other top scoring nations.

For the first time, the TI conducted survey in Nepal through the Columbia University, World Market Research Development and Merchant International Group.

ýCorruption in large-scale public projects is a daunting obstacle to sustainable development and results in major loss of public fund needed for education, healthcare and poverty alleviation, both in developed and developing countries,ý said Peter Eigen, chairman of TI, while unveiling the report.

He suggested the governments to focus on corruption control measures to meet the targets of the Millennium Development Goal as set by the United Nations. ýIf we hope to reach the Millennium Development Goal of halving the number of people living in extreme poverty by 2015, governments need to seriously tackle corruption in public contracting,ý Eigen said. nepalnews.com mbk Oct 21 04

I am not surprised. I am surprised it did not list Nepal as The Most Corrupt country in the world equivalent to Nigeria/Bangladesh.

Nepal has entered the TI List of Most Corrupt Nation after the Royal Coup. Due to the royal coup, open loot of the state treasury by royal relatives has become common. The latest instance is the 12 million that Helen took from the government for her treatment. Do not blame politicians. Blame the archaic royal rule of Nepal.

The only way to minimize corruption is:
1. To increase the salary.

Now peon gets Rs. 3000/- and the Prime Minister gets Rs. 17000/- per month.
It should be like this:
Prime Minister: Rs. 10 Lakhs per month
Deputy PM: Rs. 3 lakhs per month
Ministers: Rs 1 Lakh per month
Samsad Rs: 50 Thousands per month

Secretaries: Rs 80 thousands per months
Sahayak Cachibs: Rs 50,000/-
Saha-sachibs: Rs.40,000/-
Upa-Sachibs: Rs: 30,000/-

Officers: Rs: 25,000/-
Nayab Subbas: Rs: 20,000/-
Kharidars: Rs: 18,000/-
Mukhiyas : Rs: 15,000/-
(Peons must be removed or promoted to Mukhiyas.
We do not need poeons for bringing tea to the Hakims.
But we may need them for some good propeses.)

We msut decrease the number of Civil servents mentioned above to around 2/3.

In Nepal, Employee's Salary of Nepalese Government Office is more than enough regarding their Job, Contribution, Responsibility, Performance and Contribution. Employees of Nepalese Government not even work one hour a day hardly or Responsibly. They drink TEA and do Gossips more than they work.

If someone say not enough salary in Nepalese Government, that is bluff.

If we analyze National Income (Revenue) and Economy of Nepal, Salary in Government Employees have more than enough.

They even deserve that much.............

Nepalese Government Office must have policy to Fired and Layoff people. Nepalese Government must Organize Office and Workers performance policy, Team meeting, Work report and verification system, work evaluation system.

Must implement Layoff and Firing procedure by Law. This must force by Law or lagel system.

I am impressed! I could have told you that Nepal was a corrupt country without any research. The government down to the last person; everyone is just for themselves. The Nepali state of mind must be changed before the country can see changes.
