Namasteji, It is good that you are interested in your Brahmanical heritage. To be born a Brahmin is a privilege and an honour. I am pleased to assist in your endeavour. The Brahmins are the highest caste of Arya Hindu society. Originally Brahmins inhabited the Sarasvat region (modern Punjab). hence their appellation of Sarasvat Brahmins. Some migrated to bring civilisation to lands east of the Punjab; they began to classify themselves according to the names of the lands where they settled. Thus Maithili jati are Brahmins from Mithila rajya, Kanyakubja (Kanauji) jati are Brahmins from Kanyakubja (Kanauj) rajya. Today all Brahmins have a gotra (name of an ancestral Vedic rishi) & a jati. Many Brahmins also have a gan-gotra and other classifications such as mul (ancestral village). Regarding your maternal ancestry I can provide the following information: 1. Bhagat in Mithila is a name found amongst Maithil Brahmin jati denoting an exorcist and a physician. Maithil Brahmins have 4 divisions:Srotiya, Yogya, Panjibabha, Jaibar. Each Brahmin has a gota, a mul, and a diba ( village of later settlement). 2. Suvedi derives from the Samskrit Chaturvedi ( someone learned in the 4 Vedas) and is found in Nepal and north Bangla. In Mithila apart from Maithil Brahmins there are Nagar, Kanyakubja, Agradani/Kantaha (funeral conductor), Sakadwip & Saraswat Brahmins. As the name Suvedi is not found among Maithil Brahmins he may belong to one of the latter groups. 3. Agnihotri is a name of Kanyakubja Brahmins. 4. Pandit (scholar) is found in all castes (varna). Regarding your paternal ancestry 1. Paudal is a name found in the Himalaya region. Paudal are Brahmins although Kala Paudal are Ashprishya (untouchable). Unfortunately I am unsure of their jati but they may be Poorbiya Brahmins. 2. Aryal means descended from the Arya varna (race). I cannot name the jati. 3. Dadel may be derived from Dadel Dhura district (Nepal).

"To be born a Brahmin is a privilege and an honour". You wish it is a privilege. If you do not work your behind off you ain't nothing but a day dreamer that your caste will get you to the places. Honor? get out of here. What you do in your life matters your caste not withstanding. Do you think that you are honored just because you are born as a brahmin is a hog wash, just like some foreign dimplomat getting honoerd doctorate degree from some hotshot university. "The Brahmins are the highest caste of Arya Hindu society". Actually it is too mythical. Again you wish you are of the highest caste. All castes are highest regardless. If you think you can blow your own trumpet, go ahead. Highest in what sense? that you have some saying before other castes? What a whimp.

Gshock ji, mero agreement chai hai hazur ko bhani ma. It is this darn nepotism that is bleeding our mother Nepal, yet, I see it so very often everywhere amongst Nepalese. Amrika basee pani, they still are far too parochial when it comes to crossing cultural boundaries. What a pity? Uhi Rajeev, CT, Amrika

"To be born a Brahmin is a privilege and an honour". "The Brahmins are the highest caste of Arya Hindu society". It's a pity and a shame that people are still flying high blowing their own horns coz they were born in a supposedly high caste. It's high time they realize that "maanish thulo dil le huncha jaatle hudaina"

Be proud of your origin and be proud of whatever you are (i.e. cheetri, newar, bahun etc etc) but PLEASE dont call yourself " of the highest caste" or of superior quality because then you would be trying to put others down. I , myself being a bahun, am proud of what I am but dont think I am superior or inferior to anyone.

ur question is just a product of curiousity n nothing to do with racism or something else , lets hope it that way. For the posting of aryashakti please do understand, this is an open forum, u have the right to say what u want but there r certain norms that has to be followed for the respect of others feelings otherwise ur intectuality can be questioned in many ways..... foolish of us that we r still in the age of caste system but as soon as we fly to west we r forgetting our motherland n keep on bashing for the bad things or systems that we have over there, lets ask to our heart what have we really done in order to bring some changes in our country? I have been living in west for almost a year n first my answer is 'nothing' we all of us want nepal to be america n we always compare but lets move a step forward , there is nothing to be compared of. Now my polite request to u guys is whenever there comes a topic like this with a smell of racism lets get united n say we all r 'nepali'. we already have a lots of wound to heal lets not add more, better leave it untouched.
