Few things to consider:
1 Insurance: If you already have a car insurance on your car, you can use that insurance paper and not buy it from the car renters.
2. When to rent: Rent after noon to avoid having to pay for two days and return before the noon next day. Usually they separate the days at noon, so if you rent it at 9 am and return it at 9 am next day, you might have to pay for 1day + 3 hours (9 am to 12pm, plus next day)
3. Where to rent from: I usually rent through the national or hertz...People use priceline and other sites as well.
Also, take note of fuel before you leave and fill it to that amount before returning. Look for any dents/defects that the car might already have.
