Since Nepal is secular state and no one religion, culture and language can be opposed what should the National language be. There would be ethnic autonomy in which they will speak their own language but what about associating with other people from another region. We need one language so that we can all talk to each other on. I personally proposed for ENGLISH. I want to hear everyones serious opinion on this.

NEPALI That is our national language, that is our identity, that is what is should be. If you do not agree, let me hear your argument. But be sure to make it cogent, otherwise, you would not be worth listening to. ;-)

Knowing the fact that less than 10% of Nepali understand English, there is no point at all to consider English as one of the national language. It can be Maithili instead. If minorities really feel that "Nepali" is imposed to them, then they might feel relief for two days or three if English is also made National language. then??? But, Nepal can not afford two national languages for sure.

i strongly feel for this Nepali . how do you react to a nepali who doesn't speak nepali? we have different ethnic groups but our common attachment is the language Nepali. if that is gone i am afraid we will have a serious identity crisis. Nepali is spoken by majority anyways. What is the fuss

Hindus make the majority of the population, why is the need of making Nepal a secular state then?

Nut if your question is being directed to me my answer is this: personally i do not care if Nepal is a hindu country or not. I am a strong fan of vedic teachings and great admirer of Mata Shakti and her consort Shivaji. bottomline People may call me a hindu. whatever. i have never opposed or proposed nepal being a secular country. However only TIME will tell what really will be because oif t his proclamation.

It won't matter! Nepali language is like a parasite: it has been spreading slowly and many indigenous people in Nepal don't even speak their native tongue--they can only speak Nepali. There is no need for a national language in Nepal, because if you want to communicate/interact with the mainstream, there is NO OTHER WAY but to speak Nepali. Magars, Rais, Newars, etc have their own language, but they know that most Nepalis speak Nepali as their mother tongue. There is no need to make Nepali Nepal's national language!

I think that Nepali is indeed being imposed on various indigenous ethnicities. Once again, this just boils down to one word: choice. If you choose to speak Maithili, Bhojpuri, Newari--whatever your native tongue is--then it is your prerogative to do so. Why should Sanskrit be imposed on people as well????? How about Devnagari?? We need to protect the rights of minorities and let them decide on their own!

I don't think Nepali language is really imposed on anybody.... You can speak your language and still very much be a Nepali.. But, if you are talking about "Nepali" as a national language, be it India or America, every nation has one.. So I don't see no big deal with Nepali language... America is a secular nation and it boasts of its democracy, but even it gives emphasis to its language- ENGLISH.... People from all sorts of origin may stay at home and talk in their native languages, but when they go out, they have to speak in English because that's the common language.... So does that mean, English language is imposed on others??? If you ask me, yes it is... How wonderful it would have been, if I had tried for my student visa without going through the headache of TOEFL..... How much I would have loved my college, if it had not forced me take all sorts of English Proficiency tests after I came here... Damn I hate to remember those days :(

Yesterday, the senate approved an amendment that makes English the national language of America. That is just malarkey and stems from xenophobia. Nepal's mainstream language is Nepali. America's mainstream language is English. If you don't want to speak Nepali in case of the former, or English, in case of the latter, then have it your way. Why does it bother you so much? Give people the choice to do what they want to do. It doesn't make any difference whether Nepali is Nepal's national language or not.

why not make hindi as a national laguage. It is the favourite laguage of girija who probably loves inida more than nepal and he prefer talking in hindi with indian news channel than in english. I heard Prachande speaking in hindi as well in bbc today. so i guess maoist will have no objection.

What I meant as a national language is the language for one person from one region of the country to communicate with another. When there is ethnic autonomy then they will decide the first and second language. First language being their mother tongue of course and the other being hindi, english, nepali, etc... What I am saying is that the second language should be same for every region of the country so we will not have any problem related to communicating with one another no matter where in the country we go. Now since Nepali has been forced or whatever anyone wants to call it, on ethnic groups for so long, I would think people would want another language and the only other language that would be beneficial for anyone is English since its universal, Hindi since people go for employment to India and everyone know how to speak it. Any other language would be useless since it really has no impact on how we live. KNT dont worry about Nepali language being a parasite anymore because all bad things come to an end. Thats whats happening in Nepal. All the imposition to everyone will end. I agree with anyone that says Nepali should not be a language everyone because thats how hatred with different ethnic group would start again. My mother tongue is Nepali and I would definately not want anyone to tell me that forget my language and use someone elses.

ENGLISH SHOULD BE THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE LIKE IN INDIA. People in south India do not speak Hindi. Prefer English over Hindi. Why?? I have seen discrimination from Nepali speaking people to others like Nyars, Bhotes and Madises who are not fluent in speaking Nepali. Language discrimination sucks!!! EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE FREEDOM TO SPEAK THEIR OWN MOTHER TONGUE!!!! PERIOD!! Even in america English is not a 100% required language, you can always get translation in Spanish and other languages. I AGREE: NEPALI language AND HINDUISM STATE ENFORCED THINGS. There should be FREEDOM to carry on with your own RELIGION and LANGUAGE. I am not in favor of conversion also but you should have choice LIKE IN AMERICA -- IT IS TIME TO CHANGE THE NEPALI AND HISTORY COURSEBOOK IN NEPAL WHICH SAYS BULLSHIT GLORIFICATION OF PRITHVI NARAYAN SHAH AND OTHER SHAHS AND ALSO FREAKIN NEPALI NATIONAL LANGUAGE***** WHO MADE THIS NATIONAL LANGUAGE FREAKIN SHAH KINGS*********** SO FIGURE OUT YOURSELF IT IS NOT HARD TO UNDERSTAND****************************************** ************************************************************** STOP HATING NEPALI CITIZENS WHO ARE NOT HINDUS AND WHO DOES NOT SPEAK NEPALI********************************************************

I would like to hear more opinions or support for English as a national language. If we have different language for different region of the country, if one needs to communicate with another region then english should be the medium. Plus if Nepal tries to develop all language at once then it will take Nepal another 300 years to develop. Each ethnic group should bear the responsibility of promoting and advancing their mother tongue.
