Dear Friends,

We are going to represent Nepal in the upcoming spring festival, April 5th through April 7th, 2006 at the University of South Alabama (USA). We have great opportunity to show our rich Nepali customs and culture to Americans and to more than 100 other international communities. In spite of our relatively short history of involvement in such activities with USA, Nepalese Student Association (NSA) has been a formidable competitor and has since then consistently given a tough notch to giant nations like Indian, Japan, Vietnam and Pakistan, be it in Cricket tournament, Soccer games, international food festivals, fashion shows and dance competitions. In the previous year, we were able to get second best international student organization for the overall activities, stood next to Indian leaving behind other 98 nations! This year, we are hopping to get the best international student organization and to insure that we need support, suggestions and best wishes from Nepalese residing all over the United States and beyond.

Now, we have formed all the necessary groups to participate in individual events and we are fortunate that lots of students came forth and have offered to extend for their voluntary participations. We are immensely thankful to them. This year, we are participating in Talent show including Dance competition, Fashion show. The biggest of all events- Stall Exhibition has been the center of attraction for all and NSA has always been able to exert remarkable presence of distinct Nepali culture and customs. Last year we erected Swayambhunath stupa and inside the stipua were mini Nepal. Our biggest success was felt when NBC 13 News crew covered the events from our stall! Also recently, we are able to donate a few hundred dollars to Pranav Dhakal’ treatment in Wichita, KS. Please, visit our website (www.usouthal.edu/nepal/) for more information.

This time around, we are actively working on installation of Hindu temple in the Exhibition stall and a mini Nepal inside it. We are seeking for your generous participation, support and suggestions.

Besides that, we desperately need some typical Nepali dresses/costumes representing indigenous Nepali Himal, Pahad and Tarai men and women. We will greatly appreciate any sajhaties or sajhaties involved in their respective Nepalese organizations if they could assist us in providing those costumes or information/address to get the costumes. We will bare the expenses involved in shipping.
Thank you.

We finally made a history in the University of South Alabama by thrashing out both a long term winner Indian and tough and talented competitor Japanese and securing "First place" in over all events during international spring festival at USA. Congratulations to you all specially the participants of the each event and the hardworking and supportive cabinet and non-cabinet members of the NSA as well as all the Nepalese students and their friends and well wishers. At this fabulous movement, I would specially like to remember and thank our alumni Amit Taparia for everything, especially re-installing breath into NSA a couple of years ago and building a magnificent website for NSA. We really appreciate your persistent efforts and contribution and hope it that you would continue to do so in your future and Good luck to you for your recent job position. Good luck NSA and hope it that you would be able to keep same spirit in the coming years too.

Last Friday night, hundreds of USA students along with other visitors were present at USA-(University of South Alabama)-the Cultural Show, featuring performances by Seven Asian Countries. The show was held at the USA Student center packed with USA students and their families, along with delegates from various departments.
The cultural performances started with Malaysia’s most popular Drama. We were treated to a contemporary musical drama. The performance brought a laugh from the audience. They were basically trying to satire their political parties on number of government holidays during a year period.
Japanese were the center of attraction. They performed Japanese’s most popular Long Drum Dance, which imitates the sound of a drum. The dance is very popular in Japan due to its simplicity.
Nest up was the harvesting and threshing dance from Nepal performed by sixteen Nepalese students, coordinated by Rashmi Tandulkar (cultural coordinator). The performance from Nepal wowed viewers, with Nepalese ladies in their elegant classical costumes, accompanying a pop song called “Taal ko pani”.
The cultural show ended with India’s most popular “Bharat Natyam Dance” performed solo by a south Indian girl. This year’s judges were Jim Marther, member of International student’s services along with professors. First prize went to Nepal, closely followed by India and Japan.
The party had to end. But members of the NSA community went away once again reminded of the diversity that brings people here together, and looking forward to the next occasion to celebrate who we are….
