By SHIKHAR, Associated Press Writer Fri Sep 16,10:58 AM ET NEW YEAR - Thousands of Nepalese residing in New York and other cities in the US lined up on both sides of the street in front of the UN building in New York to protest King Gynendra's assumption of absolute power earlier this year. The New York police had to arrest hundreds of protesters when the protest turned voilent and the protesters started throwing rotton tomatoes and eggs at the King's limosine when it slowly passed the huge gathering. Anti monarchy slogans were heard and huge banners and placards were on display all over the streets of New York. Cindy Sheehan was the honarary grand marshal for the rally that followed. During her hour long speech she said " President Bush should pull out all american troops from occupied Nepal immediately since Nepal has no oil". Tthe rally started at the UN building in New York and ended infront of the Royal Nepalese Embassy in Washington DC, where the protestors were given chai and samosa and then everyone dispersed and went home.

If the cause and effect is examined, the possible scenario should not be forgotton.. What are the possible scenarios once you get the KING out. Possible effect 1. Everything works smoothly and we have a perfect democracy right away 2. Slowly things take shape and the new democracy actually works. Let's say it takes good shape in 10 years. 3. Things deteriorate further and further. Making Nepal a hopeless situation. India takes over since the disturbances in Nepal begins to affect India. From all the experience we have of our politicians and the situation of Nepal, which is likely to happen? Need your honest opinion.

From what I have heard, the rally had about 80-100 people shouting anty monarchy slogans. Everyone wanted the mic and wanted to give some bhaasan. There was basically no media except from Gunaraj Luitel of Kantipur who betrayed his journalistic dharma and exaggerated the number to be over 500. It was more a rally of leader wannabe's. This is a report I received from a friend of mine who attended the rally. That said, I still salute the rallyists who participated and voiced their concern and opinion in NY. The rally in NY will have reverberation in Nepal, in that sense it was ok. नहुनु मामा भन्दा कानो मामा हुनु नै जाति । अस्तु

It seems the people who went NY for the rally thought they achieved a lot. Good positive thinking. My only question to all the 400-500 ("even though only 368 signed") people who were there is "how many of you voted in the last election in Nepal". A rally in New York will never bring democracy in Nepal, what it might bring is an asylum to some of you. I am sure most of you didn't go there really thinking this would make a difference in the current political crisis. If rallies could make a difference, Nepal would be the most developed country in the world. Just count the amount of rallies we have in Nepal, especially in the last 8-10 years. What we need to do is demand from our "so called democratic leaders" like Girja et al to step down and give the leadership to a new generation which thinks largely about development, economy, education and technology. We have to tell them we will not vote, not support them until this is done. In the mean time let the king rule. What we do is just yell at whoever is in power. But think clearly and the king is the best alternative to all other leaders in the country. Until there are new generations of leaders, there are no differences as to who rules. Please don't waste your time driving or flying to NY or anywhere, Gas is expensive and so is your time.

I concur Biggy Small!!! looking at the pics of the rally from the link above...it looked nothing more than a nepali version of a broadway CLOWN SHOW!! and just look at some of the other faces in the rally and tell me if you see anyone with compassionate face that looked really dishearten by the suffering of our people back home. you see nothing but people laughing, posing for pictures, and some confused looking faces too (esp the kids and the middle age women). and like biggy pointed out above, political asylum as an out of the rally had to be in the minds of some if not most who attended the clown show and sign in their name (i'm sure for leagl purposes sign in forms will be kept safely come asylum filing time). but what i find pretty funny is that, even with such hidden agenda the rally failed to gather any more crowd in a city where the number of illeagal nepali workers is over 10,000. so, when i hear from these same group of individuals who attended the rally telling me they are the only true concerned, responsible, and devoted sons and daughters of our motherland and working towards creating a better nepal....and i am suppose to beleive them?? when they are only looking for a reason to file asylum so their unpatrotic butts can start collecting uncle sam's checks in america?? GIVE ME A BREAK!

I predict the effectiveness of this rally to be the same or less than the one that was held in DC few months back. If I were to categorize the people who joined the protest, I would come up with 3 of them: 1) The Maoists protesting in the name of democratic republic, whose only short-run aim is to bring the King down no matter how as he has been their biggest obstacle before their goal to make Nepal a communist state after may be getting the Nepalese population down by few thousands or millions, and that too if their thirst for blood is quenched. 2) The corrupt, opportunist ?would like to be? politicians, or ex-politicians or ex-government representatives post 1990, who again see King as their biggest obstacle to their spree of hoarding country?s money and selling it to India. 3) And then there are few who really view King as an obstacle to the democratic progress and development of Nepal and would genuinely want to see a change for the betterment of the country and not personal. Now the problem is, the people from Group 2 have connections and ability to deceive and mis-guide and can amass few hundred Nepalese ?bhedas? easily in US to protest for democracy in Nepal with their hidden self interest. Then comes along, people from Group 1, with hidden agenda of their own but find democracy in Nepal and King the obstacle, as a common denominator with Group 2 to team up. These two different groups are ready to backstab each other if their common denominator is ever to be achieved, as their self-interests and hidden agenda vary. However, they manage to work together at least at the basic level. And Group 3, no one gives a shit about them. Group 1 and Group 2, know that what Group 3 wants, a genuine democracy in Nepal, is not possible as long as their own existence remains. And these people from Group 3 are less influential in such protests and have few ?bhedas? who follow them because people who have belief in them and share the same view believe that to bring a real change in Nepal, one should be in Nepal holding such protest and choose to rather watch College Football on TV than to bake yourself in the sun of by celebrating ?Ghai-Jatara? or an early ?Halloween? in USA.
