PHD in business related subject is a very intesting line of work indeed. Unless you are going to persue research/education it might be tough for you to capitalize on your background. However there seems to be a demand for busines people who can apply social science to it. There seem If you already have biz background, I would persue something else for phd. One thing positive about bush administration is that they want non profits to come up with financially sustainable model. so i am sure in the future in teh world of non profit we will begin to see leaders that are socially conscious biznessmen or biznesswomen. good luck!

Hello FMN, I am in third year in the college of business. Getting into a doctoral program will make sense if you are thinking of a career in teaching/research, else 10 year commitment may have lots of oppurtunity costs in terms of your career advancement in practical world. I say 10 year for a career in teaching/research because it takes 4-5 yrs to get a degree and another 4-5 yrs more for tenure in university. Will be glad to to share my experience if you are interested, send me your contact info. Happy New Year 2005. Take care.

PhD in finance from a reputed school is a big deal. A good friend of mine from a very reputed school and with impeccable GPA was turned down by Stern Business School(NYU) and Stanford business school. (He got into another school, which is not among top 10.) Later, he told me he came to know someone who got into Stanford that year from his country: the guy had won (gold medal in) math olympiad. The goal of PhD in finance is entirely different from MBA or something like that. PhDs in finance have a wide array of opportunities available to them, including teaching in MBA schools, or going to industry. Salary of graduates from low ranking schools start from 120K if they work as a MBA-school's professor. Top finance schools PhDs often, however, prefer to go to economics department to teach, because of the freedom afforded to them in creating their own syllabus and doing independent research. I don't know any Nepali doing PhD in top finance school so far, but that doesn't mean there are none. You can always try to get into. The usual prolbem of professoriat , low salary, won't be a matter if you teach in MBA schools, so rest assured, you will have a bright future if you get into any of the top schools.

I am doing a PhD in Finance from a top 20 business school. It was in the top 20 according to BusinessWeek.I am in the West Coast.Basically, besides having the mandatory admission requirements for a PhD in Finance, you need something extra. I don't know what that is. PhD in Finance is a very different ballgame than a MBA in Finance. Phd's have a wide array of employemnt opportunities. If anybody out there needs any information on what the program actually is, I will be very happy to help.
