It depends on your Budget. I would not get any Dedicated VPS coz thats just crap and is not Dedicated in terms of resources. If you have the money then go with Rackspace. I really like their support. If you just want to start out then try Cloud Hosting though Mosso, its a Rackspace Company. The basic start with 100 bucks. Since its in the cloud. you can deploy webs apps in different architecture.

Architecture as in you windows based i.e .Net vs your Linux - LAMP, Ruby on Rails, Python, with dedicated or shared you can have one or the other, but with cloud u can have both.

What are you looking for? Is it huge data trasfer (bandwidth)? One reasons why websites get slow is not having enough bandwidth during heavy traffic. Dedicated hosting can be fast if the server has a huge bandwith alongwith proper resources installed. Look out for such Hosting Servers who can provide huge bandwidth.

Hey don't go with MOSSO if you take a lot of bandwidth. While $100 month is starting price, I've even paid 400 bucks because of their limited bandwidth limit. Then I went with Lunarpages ko VPS.

Reasons 1. Cheap Does not mean its always better. 2. Quality of the servers (branded vs white box) 3. Looking at the softnep dedicated server (celeron come on, the most powerful is a dual core xeon which are so 2000) 4. Service (very very important) 5. Network Backbone 6. Backup (Most of the rackspace server came with unmetered backup) 7. To talk to people who know what they are doing (support) 8. Not having to deal with resellers, that are middle man between the real host thus, they are the middle man between the support too. To tell you the truth VPS is a nice technology. Depending on your needs a VPS can suit you or not. In my case its a no on VPS. But if you have a not so resource intensive app then go with VPS. One really cool feature i like about VPS is restoring your Instance of the VPS from a backed up image. But its nice to know rackspace provides all different flavor of Hosting out there. These are my opinion. Thats all.

Interesting topic. I was just trying to upgrade mine. My view.. --Service is very important --It will help a lot if you have some knowledge about it as well. --Do not be too cheap also. Bandwidth can cost you a lot. Google is loosing money on Youtube mainly due to the bandwith. -- Consult with an expert also. It also depends on what you need it for? In my case I run for just one website that takes lots of resources. Choosing the right server can also be confusing since there are many choices/configurations. Yes Rackspace is well known but there are others that are good too. Try to deal with those who knows a lot about dedicated hosting. For example, I wouldn't go with godaddy. By the way if you want lil cheaper option then you can try VPS as well, but it really depends on your need. I will be more than happy to discuss with you on this matter. You can email me via sajha. Good Luck. Nischal.

By the way... celeron is also fine. I have been using for a while now, and I consume over 1tb (bandwidth)....
