Green card should be good help. I am not familiar with your specific industry. But since you have an engineering degree the backround should be good. So if you are willing to go through a little bit of training and change in field there should be good prospects in the IT field. Especially  Oracle, Sap, People Soft etc. Find a consultancy who will train you. And you should be good to go.

Hey, smiti, which uni did you go to in Aust? I went to UWS, and I am currently employed in IT field.. and there are a lot of opportunity in IT in here... so, welcome to US, I had no one to welcome me in here when I came from Australia... but dude, to be honest, Australia is much better place to be in..

Anyway, different place different taste.. so enjoy it, let me know if I can help with anything..

Latoboy,

I guess everyone has different experience in different place.. I agree the job market in the US is better than it is in Australia but I found Aust is much better country to live in, compare to US in many other aspects... Probably you know, two cities (syd, mel) of Australia always make on  UN's top 10 cities to live in but not even one city from US makes on that list...

I lived mostly in sydney, and there so many things to do, (i.e you wanna go to beaches? just 20 mins drive, and you end up in  some of the best beaches in the world, do you want to hangout in downtown untill 3 am, and come home safe? not a problem.... and ofcourse if you are a resident then all medicare, education(in some case you get paid to study)  is taken care by govt....

but again, everyone's choice is different... I just came to US for different experience and already have enough,..and am planning to go back next year...

Sajan is right. Everyone is different and different taste. Even in state to state and city to city people have their preferances. Whatever the reason you felt good about australia might be reason for other people. I know some people who came from texas to california, nice job, good weather but they still prefered to go back to texas just because they have been living there for years and once u stick to one place for long time, no matter where u go, u still find ur original place much better. So it all come down to ur preferance. In general no other country can match usa as favorable destination but as i said different people, different choice.
