Hey guys , I am from Alabama. I am a student here and working real hard to pay off my tution bills. I work around 60 hr per week (sometimes more sometimes less). Even though I save roughly around 800-1000 every month. Therefore my annual saving after paying off two semester tution, phone bills, appartment , utility , health insurence, car insurence , grocessary, occasonal travels and so on.....will be roughly around 3000. This is my second yr here in US and so far I have only saved 4000.
I am thinking about moving from here ,therefore I was just curious that people from which state saves more. I am not trying to figure out how much people make money but how much they save. After all saving is the thing that matters.
Lets talk about it.

rockey07,
I guess its the investment that matters more than saving for a student right now. Be careful about your grades, dont know how you can manage if you are almost working 60hrs per week, if you are still maintaining good grades then I should say you are exceptional.
I hardly think there are someone without debt, esp when you are student, and its not bad too. I have seen so many indian not working at all and studying to their best with the loan, pass out quickly and have a great job.
So rather then saving few thousanda of dollar, I'd better want you to go to nice school, give more time in study and career research side by side, so that after you graduate you'll have sth that will really pay you off more than your current savings.
Its a personal view so you can take anyway you like but I guess these are already the things you know. But just like sharing.
Whatever you do good luck !

Rockey,
Save what you can, when you can. Remember, eventually it is not your degree but your benjamins that buy you your dream house, cars, vacations, etc. If you play properly, your 4thou savings of today could yield 10thou by the time you graduate. But it will take time away from everything you do so passionately.
Plan on having a good sum of money when you come out of college, and yes, if you think you have quite a lot, get out of college right now and get into the business of making money.

well,
i am not exactly answering your question about where you should move, but if you can save another 1000 dollars then you should open an investment account in bank of america.. which gives you an annual percentage of 3.5. I think its preety good, than just putting money in the checking or savings account.. you could easily be making about 200 dollars as interest.. just a suggestion. The interest rate is really low right now because the market crashed a month ago.. Its usually 4-5 %. So, definetly something to think about. Or, you could even find some other banks which might give more interest.

Jashmine,
The interest rate is low not because the "market crashed a month ago" but because of slow economic growth, companys are not posting good quater results due to credit mess, so fed is contineously lowering the interest rate in the past years and analysts still predict more to come.
By the way there was no market crash a months before. That was to saved by fed lowering interest rate.
Anyways, I see the points you are trying to say to rockey07 valid !

i am going to one of the best universities in the country and i am paricipating in research too. i work between 20-30 hrs and my gpa is above 3.5. i have my saving of about 20,000 dollars. but now, i am thinking my work is interfering with my studies and planning to quit in near future. so, guys work unless that does not affect your study and don't try to look for the place where you can make more money. But look for a better university better progrm. That will definitely pay you off in your future. |

Well guys it seems there is some miss understanding going on. I am saving money for my education itself ,not for nice car or plasma tv or other fancy things. I'm not the one who die for money.the real thing is that,Rt now i am going to the community college where i dont have to pay much but i'm planning to transfer to the university soon .....so i need money. I cannot work like this after i go to university. So i have to save as much money as i can while at community college.
By the way ARYANS brother!!! how did you maintain to save such amount of money just by working 20-30 hr ? what work do you do any way, and which state are u from?? I would really want to hear from you.
NEPALICYKO brother!! I am from the northern side of alabama near to tenessee. This is a small but happening palce of alabama. rest you figure out yourself.

Rockey07, now you are talking. I think you have the right strategy so far. CommColl, and xfer to 4yrColl. From my personal experience, though not as extensive and envious as yours, I think you should definitely go to a good brand college. This may require you to take money out on loan (credit cards, etc). But with a good brand degree in your hand, you will be in a better position to recover the expenses at 4yrColl.
Also, the choice of college depends on what you want to study. I guess this would be an entirely new topic of discussion, diverting from your original question related to finances.
