NEW DELHI: Even as India is looking to make a significant intervention in Nepal, New Delhi is faced with the daunting task of getting Nepalese monarch Gyanendra to make concessions to the pro-democracy insurrection in time to ensure that the institution of monarchy itself is not damaged beyond repair.

Gyanendra’s efforts to speak to political leaders are being watched carefully by India.

Intelligence inputs from Kathmandu still do not allow policy-makers to conclusively pronounce whether the his initiative is sincere, or another exercise in buying time.

There is an air of skepticism as the palace has typically sought to play pro-democracy leaders, by no means united or above compromise, against one another or pit political parties against Maoists.

But keeping in view the unprecedented unrest gripping Nepal, agencies monitoring the situation are arguing Gyanendra does not have the luxury of resorting to stalling tactics.

The sheer force of the popular revolt against him has led India to seek to persuade him he must reach an accommodation with parties and an agreed plan to restore democracy.

India’s concerns are compounded by the view monarchy needs to be kept "relevant" in order to provide a balance to Nepal’s political system.

Sources said the course of popular politics, once an electoral process is restored, is very unclear. Just how far Maoists are actually sincere about accepting multi-party democracy and what would their role in legislatures be is subject to speculation.

In the event, retention of monarchy with the support of the Royal Nepalese Army was of interest to India. What is worrying Indian observers is that so far, Gyanendra has shown no inclination to accept "sound" advice.

All major powers, US, India, China and EU nations, have urged him to meet the Seven Party Alliance and engage them in a positive dialogue.

Balance Of Power Man Balance of Power ..we have already seen what happens when one side is more stronger than other ..Especially in Nepal
i can give you tons of reason ..why the present king is Stupid and His son the no.1 bastard but still .a country full of bastards leaders ..he is no exception.

Monarchy is not Gyane or Paras..monarchy is an institution which is a integral part of our history and culture.
What is so bad keeping royals in Nepal?
- i have only one good reason cause we have no one to be Head of state...plain none.. Dying Grija ..who next ?? Prachanda or Baburam or any party leaders at this time any better than Gyane ..there is simply no one.

what happens when there is no Monarchy?
- more fights among idiots polticians- janjati - madeshi -- it has all begun.
Leftist- commies will be more powerfu

At this point, I don't see monarchy will be staying in Nepal...And Nepal people will regret after it is gone just like Afganisthan.
They have always regreted in every decision they have made so far..this won't be any exception. ONe thing for sure Nepali haru ko bhagenai karab yaar..ho ki sati le sarapeko desh ..jai bhaeya pani...Badar ko haath ma nariwal ho .

Why save the institution when monarchies had so much opportunities to act but condition of Nepal erroded with their selfishness. We will survive as nation, these tumoils are nothing but after shocks effect. But to ask for the same institution back by not knowing what future holds is childish. World's surving monarchies are there just because they are powerless and looks only good on tabloid stories, otherwise it's a thrown out tradition. What if monarchy is back in nepal without power? nothing good except we will be talking their about Junga(already started), hairstyle, lifestyle, fashion, who dates who etc. And what if they come back with power? well we all know the history.... so stop arguing abount monarchy as symbol of unity as this is just based on brahanissm(not bahunism). To tell you the truth, people who are afraid of nepal later are those who have excess and exploited the system and donot want any change. Middle class or poor people has nothing to afraid as equality is the most sought phenomenon both by capatilism and socialism(in theory).
there were two good active "durdarshi" monarchy in nepal, prithivi narayan and Mahendra ( that's right, he was the only one who wanted to get rid of indian influence thus panchayat system (even controvisial) whether you agree or not) but they are being questioned and disrepected time to time and now even vandalised. But two good monarchy in 237 years, that is not a good data to represent. All i ask you is believe in people, don't be so negative, it will be all right and don't try to get back what it didn't workout....establishment of monarcy in afganishtan (as well as in iran) is just a propoganda smeared by the west.l peace......

I don't think this "news" has any value today, because it is one year old, and the situation now is much different than it was then.

Mr truth was right to say "people who are afraid of nepal later are those who have excess and exploited the system and donot want any change."

I am sincerely trying to understand why people want to keep monarchy and, so far, I have not found any viable reason.

One said monarchy is an institution. But we have so many institutions, why should this particular institution, with particularly bad history, be saved?

Another said monarchy is our history. Sure, but that alone does not suffice. If monarchy is our history, they they should be history, no?

Yet another said without monarchy we will have anarchy. Besides the ho-hall and personal opinions, is there really a proof of that? Are we Nepali janatas so incompetent, incapable and with no self-confidence that we do not believe in ourselves to govern ourselves?

Many said, well, let's have full functioning democracy but let's keep monarchy as ceremonial symbol. Are you sure? Why?

First, we can hardly afford it. There ain't much dough to go around in our already impoverished country. Why keep a money drain (some call it parasite)?

Second, if it is ceremonial symbol we are looking for, why should that be royals? Why not Pashupatinath or Swayambhu or Boudha or Kapilvastu?

Third, why do we want to keep a dog knowing that it is rabid and prone to attacking people given a chance?

Why? WHY? WHY? WHY?

Kingship needs to abolish. It is not good for the country for long term. If we put king in Nepal, we will never progress towards democracy. The king has always tried to illiterate and ignorant people so that the people of nepal obey or worship him and he can enjoy the benefits since there is no one to challenge him. The present situation in Nepal is the result of supression of the kingship and his policies.People are marching in the right direction.Democracy will definately need time to flourish . Some people might say there were peace when the king was in power. It is absolutely wrong. Because of his supressions towards the minorites, minorities were dying and boiling inside. All this has to come sooner or later and it came now and now we all can march towards the democracy and kick the king out of the thrown. We don't need king. We don't want to follow the same dark path again.Kingship is dying from the world. We don't need king. We cannot afford king.I bet the murderer king wants to create the atmosphere to believe that there were peace when king was in power. That was wrong. People were scared to revolt. They shoot the people in the dayliht and get away with it. Because they were above the constitution.
