Since The law changed .SSN is not required for foreign students .It is required only when you work to file taxes. So , as international students you have no rights to ask for SSN.but even if you find a job on campus and proof that you have been offered job but require SSN then they will process your case.
Sorry. because of Terrorist muslims other people from country suffer. The immigration rules started getting stricter after 911.
God knows if there is one more attack in USA..may be they will be more tighter regulations.

I think international students should file a class actipon suit against banks and credit card companies because they refuse to open an account without SSN.

When that happens those banks will lobby the congress to issue SSN to international students.

When i tried to get an apartment in chicago, they ask me for my SSN. Since i don't have that they simply refuse ....Crap man...Our collge SUX.

Some of my frineds told me that they have SSN even they never work on campus. Simply they go to the director of international services and make to sign on some papers. ( i don't know what's in that paper) and then they apply for the ssn...

Is that possible ?

you can even apply for work permit to work off campus if you don have on campus job. you can show some documents regarding your financial hardship. But i am not sure how long you have to go to the same skool in order to apply for that. some of the ppl i know have done that.
