Dr. Sanduk Ruit is one of unsung heroes of Nepal. He keeps on working for Nepalese people silently. I think most of our politicians don't care about him, may be they even don't know about him. He has been awarded Magsaysay award recently. He is being honored for “placing Nepal at the forefront of developing safe, effective and economical procedures for cataract surgery, enabling the needlessly blind in even the poorest countries to see again,†for more please read here; - http://www.nepalnews.com/archive/2006/jul/jul31/news13.php Once again, congratulations Dr. Ruit!

These awards are billed as "Asia's Nobel Prizes". Two other Nepalis have received these awards in the past. 1. Economic historian Mahesh Chandra Regmi (whose books are must-read for anyone interested to understand aspects of how Nepal has become what it has become today.) 2. Journalist Bharat Dutta Koirala (who, alas, much to my disappointment, kept quiet and was -- in my personal view, unprofessionally and icily aloof -- throughout the times press freedoms were under assault in Nepal.) Dr. Ruit richly deserves this award. Dr. Ruit is NOT exactly an unsung hero; he is well-known throughout the world -- among his professional peer-group of medical doctors as well as with the general public at large -- for his work to bring eyesight to those who need it. He travels all around to collect various international awards from time to time for his work. Congratulations, Dr. Ruit, and very best wishes. You are an inspiration to all of us -- to do what we do with joy and in the best way to serve others. oohi ashu

Thank you Ashu dai for more informations. By "unsung", I meant in Nepal. He hasn"t been recognized well yet by Nepalese establishment. But I may be wrong, as I am out since last few years.

It's good NOT to be to have "been recognized well . . . by Nepalese establishment". I have seen many good people in Nepal becoming bad, khattam and jhoor and just plain lazy AFTER being recognized "by Nepalese establishment." So, I would not worry too much about Nepalis doing some fo the most interesting work not being recognized by the home-grown establishments . . . All things being equal, better to remain somewhat insecure, and continue to do one's work in a better and better manner -- knowing fully well that the day you consider yourself "established" in nepal, your doom will be near. Just my evolving thoughts -- after several years of quietly following the careers of initially remarkable people in Nepal who went on to be, well, quite unremarkable after they started throwing the weight of their "established" status. :-) oohi ashu

Let me join you all in extending my congratulations to Dr. Ruit for his much deserved award. I would also venture to say that when you are not a part of an "afno maanche" coterie in Kathmandu's so called elite, and caste conscious vicious circle, you hardly get any recognition within your country. Whatever you may have in your front end to show, you may have a different one in your back end. Truth be told. Instead of rejoicing with all your hearts at the recognition of a fellow Nepali from a remote place, in their inner circles and in core of their hearts, some may be uttering, "tyo bhotay lai po diyechha..yespali??" We have a long way to go. Besides, the establishment's recognitions usaully come in the form of a useless sycophantic Go. Da. Ba., a ministerial berth or some managerial posts which need different talents than one has. I agree with Ashu it becomes an easy path to their laziness and virtually ruining the talent.

It is fianlly good to hear a Nepalese success story. What an inspiration for us all. I visited his lens making lab. few years ago and I was amazed. Some credit must also go to an American opthalomologist called Geoffrey Tabin, who has helped Dr. Ruit. I hope children of Nepal model themselves on figures like Dr. Ruit and not be swayed by Girija or Prachanda.

I've seen him and his work on the National Geography on MS NBC with Lisa Ling on the journey to Mustang for Moti Bindhu clinic for free. It was one of the few moment where I was proud to be a Nepali. Must see, a very heart touching and generous man, Ruit If you can, find the show. I have it recorded on VHS and I have no way to make copies.
