you can change pdf to text easily in linux environment (no idea in windows) and then to word document easily. that's the way i do but don't know the software. nw suggestion might work. but, copying some part of pdf file is better to using "Select" tool (might help avoiding plagiarism to some extent) if you open file by Acrobat Reader, which can not be done if opened using Xpdf, PDF File Viewer, KGhostView, etc.

Do any of you guys know about any OCR application. I have these pdf files which are basically faxed copies of typed document. Regular pdf to word or excel does not seem to work as they give me blank lines. Any suggestions??

I have used OCR....occasionally...Its recognition works in accordance to the library built into the OCR software...If it finds something it can't read/recognize, it will either substitute or give you scribbles (garbage)....Just my 2 cents !
