A colleague of mine at an Australian University has received an application for a graduate program from a student linked with Pokhara University. I think I am as clueless as she is in terms of the reputation of this university. I would be much obliged if anyone can give guidance or comment on it if you have had personal experience. Also, it would be fascinating to know if you have any clues as to the ranking of this university compared to TU?

TIA,
-JBeans

Let me get this clear. Your friend, probably a faculty or an admission office staff at the university, who is supposedly going to decide or influence the admission on this application if replying on you to find out aoubt Pokhara University and you intern are asking people in this forum, who are mostly anynymous, to provide you with a reliable information; what arbitary!

I have never heard of a Pokhara University myself, but when I googled on it, I found few links, which could easliy lead you to the right person / office in Nepal for the right and reliable information that you are looking for.

I don't think we have proper ranking of university in Nepal and TU is definitely not a benchmark. Proper accredition if of the university or the department is what matters I think.

Don't get me wrong, I see that you are making an honest effort to get the right information but the way you went about puzzled me. What would this student think if he / she is a Sajha visitor and reads this.

In 2001, I went to see Vice Chancler of Pokhara University
and had a chance to meet to Registrar and other deans
of some schools.

Well, Nepal's first private engineering college run by
Mr. Deepak Bhattarai and company is also incorporated
under PU. Pokhara University at that time had 26 colleges
and one of them where I was taken on a Tour (as a compliment
of being faculty at a Jap. Univ and also being interested in
joing Pokhara Univ. as a facutly..... and also being a guy
from Pokhara). I can say confidently that Pokhara University
at that was in 3-4th year of operation. I remember the
situation of Kathmandu University in 1994, when I went
to meet Prof. Sharma and his deputy Dr. Bhattarai at
Lazimpat office. Comparing these two universities'
early stages, I can tell that Pokhara University will also
flourish one day (with 10years as KU did it in last 10years).
Pokhara University has about 200 ropani land and
.... so its not that bad univ. as you look skeptical.
Forget about having website of a univ in developing
country. IF you need you can find information on it
via http://www.pokharacity.com/

or if you would like to talk to faculties of PU, some of like
minded teachers in PU have started a discussion forum
at Google beta group.com.

Check http://groups-beta.google.com/group/PokharaUniversity/

As long as Nepal Engineering College's students are concerned
they are competent enough and above average the worlds
technical universities.

I guess your univ has some other criteria that can determine
where a particular student falls e.g. GRE in USA.

Good Luck.
GP

Good Luck.

The admitting university has internal proprietary databases of other universities around the world. The reason PU may not yet exist is that it seems to be fairly new (<10 years in operation) and its probable to assume my colleague has never received an application from such university in the past. That isn't to say she may be entitled to other available resources within the uni.

The reason for my post here to collate any personal insights/experiences or info related to nepali education affiliated organizations, which perhaps may affirm the legitimacy of this university. I will have to play vigilante on the info I get to filter out excess foam I suppose. It's a bit tricky when the uni does not have a website. Obviously, I beg to discount its reputation simply b/c it lacks a presence on the web.

Those are helpful links; thank you GP. And I've sent you an email Ashu.

Cheers.

I am an MBA graduate from Pokhara University myself and am currently teaching HRM to BBA students in one of its affiliate colleges in Kathmandu.
JBeans, you must have left Nepal a long long time ago. Nepal's education system has long been decentralized after 1990 (or I believe it was in 1995 that a separate Act was enacted to govern private universities). Since then, at least three universities have opened up apart from Tribhuvan University and Mahendra Sanskrit University. Unlike these older two universities where the King is also the Chancellor, all three new universities have the Prime Minister as their Chancellor. The three newer ones are: Kathmandu, Pokhara and Purbanchal Universities. I think the current vice-chancellor of Pokhara University is Dr. Purushottam Banskota.
The Pokhara University is headquartered in Pokhara but does have its contact office in Gyaneshwore, Kathmandu (Behind USIS premises). Among the well known colleges affiliated to Pokhara University include: Ace Institute of Management, Apex College, Nobel College, Cosmos College, NEC in Kathmandu. In Pokhara, it runs its own college under Pokhara University Campus. Sorry if I missed other important ones.
Well, the best part about Nepal's education system after the opening of other universities is that there are so many different colleges offering different courses right in their home country. Hopefully, it has been able to fulfill a certain percentage of that gap of students leaving the country for further studies. Frankly speaking, I myself didn't have to come to the States to finish till my MBA though I think i should now get a little taste of the American education system in one popint of my further studies. But primarily, in my opinion, to judge if the universities are good or not depends mostly on the effortds of the individual students themselves. The universities only just ensure a proper environment - which I got when I studied in a Kathmandu based management college affiliated to Pokhara University.
