I want to start the discussion with this question that Bill Gates had raised during the TED (Technology Entertainment Design) talk back in 2009

How do we make a teacher great?

Past 10 years, the number of private schools has increased significantly. In the mean time effort has been put forth to build some community focused school through charity work, which is great indeed. My concern is just building the school and having class full of students does not ensure the quality education that we need which is essential to tackle our basic needs. Building a school of course is like having a great window to look through towards promising future but not enough. We need to put some design inside so that u feel better every time you sit in there and will be able to explore the future, at least with a bit understanding if not with sheer clarity. For that we need a good architect, a teacher, with great mentoring skills, and I believe that’s what we are lacking in Nepal. So how do we make a teacher great? I would love to hear your ideas. I think its great question to answer specially for the nation like ours where education has been commercialized and politicized.

This summer I am planning to go back to Nepal. I am planning to take initiative to provide free tutoring for the school children. The only purpose is sharing the knowledge and help them to get through difficulties they might have, it could be home work problems or it could be the difficulties in understanding the subject materials or so so.

For the startup I will approach to those charity organizations that are providing shelter and education for disadvantaged group. Later on if more people joined me as a volunteer, we’ll approach to the public school where kids from low income family come to study and we'll try to run recitation class there. I think this will be really helpful to those parents having difficulties fulfilling the basic needs despite the hard work. Parents can’t pay for the tuition; they can’t provide the environment that a growing children needs and teacher does not pay much attention to the weaker one, eventually they left behind.

So I want to help them. Some of my friends in Nepal are positive towards it. If you have some ideas or better ways to do it or already have done this sort of activities, please share here. Please feel free to comment on it. U guys are amazing, I am sure you guys have better ideas to share.

Great thinking. It would be better if we can involve locals around the school. There are so many young ppl who are well educated but wasting there time doing nothing. We can give them volunteer certificated as a incetives which can motivate them.

This is just one idea there can be many more.

thankyou
