i have two kids and they don't respect me at all . i want to teach them nepali way of discipline like whenever they see me, i want them to do darshan or namaskar . todays generation kids don't care about anything all they care about is cartoon . no respect for elder , no respect for anybody . is there any way to teach them manners . back in those days whenever i used to see my father i used open his socks and put my head in the leg , whenever i used to see my other relatives do darshan in hand and other relatives just namaste .look at the kids now they just don't care . is there any polite way of teaching them manners which we inherited .

I don't think saying darshan to the elders EVERYTIME you see is nepali discipline; it might be in some culture, but at least not in my culture. I think you're overexpecting it. If you demand too much and discipline the kids too much, they'd be uncontrollably rebellious after some time. I will never want my kids to respect me in that way by saying darshan hajur and helping me to put my socks or bowing stuff. Even if you succeeed in getting them do that way, do you want them to behave that way when you guys are alone in home or in the presence of others too? You may not feel anything but do you think their peers won't feel awkward/weird assuming you're in america? If they're lacking in manners and have disrespect to elders in other ways, it's good that you're tyring to be a good parent and good luck for that.

Being raised by their grandma I do not have such behavorial problem with my kids. In fact, when I visited Nepal last year everybody I met praised the way my kids respected their seniors. My point is- working parents should put little extra effort to teach their children manners et al. Just my view.

BIKARM TEMPO,
what do you want?? you want your kids to be slave??
and yeah they are kids, if they don't watch cartoons and all, what do you expect them to do. watch P***. you need to forget about what you used to do. its different society and culture where your kids are been raised. Just make sure they don't get into bad habits, such as drugs and all...

and intellignet guy,
AVM stands for adarsha vidya mandi. and who said admitting kids to expensive boarding school will teach'em manners and discipline.
