Folks, I am graduate student under F1. I have regular graduate assistantship. I did a different project during summer and my professor wants to me continue the project this semester. it is not included under assistant ship ( i mean its different payment). i am wondering that may i hold that job in addition to my assistanhip. Because full time student can hold 20 hrs work during class. I did Google search but it says no. Is there any ways i can continue my project in addition to my assistantship? Regular School DSO just resigned and one guy is working for transition period ( he is not regular DSO) and he doesn't have any idea about the laws. so i have to make sure myself. I am graduating December. so please, share your ideas, experience. it will be appreciated. Thank You

u cannot work more than 20 hrs during your school time even if u r on CPT. if ur GA is 20 hours then u cannot work in another billable projects. but if ur prof. want you to work on project then u can tell him to pay on cheque not in form of regular payment; cheque in the sense it will be in your name but for no reason, nothing stated. suppose i am giving u some money using my cheque it will get it but no record of work. my fren did same as his prof. also agreed. so talk to ur professor, if he accepts enjoy otherwise u know.

Hi, you can work . GRA position is different than the other work given in the US university . for example. F1 student enrolled in microbiology or any science Ph D program or master degree program have to work extensive hour in the lab performing reserach ( sometime 8AM to 10 PM or even more). if IF Ph D student doesnt allow more than 20 hour a week in the lab how can they finish their project within 5 year ? GRA work is totally different and they dont pay by hour it is paid on the basis of semester or based on the yearly GRA grant. I am not sure your position . when I was in the graduate student I used to work more than 40 hour a week in the lab and never had any issue.

haha lots of deal, i am now laughing for ur comments. when u don't know don't give comments or suggestions that may hamper their status if followed. yup GA amount is adjusted for a yr or semester but are accounted on hourly basis while paying.

jhyamma and lostofdeal, Thanks guys. My GA is semester based. there is no hours specified for GA. GA just included the tution reimbursement for 6 credits that i am taking this semester which in my last semester. I am working with same professor for GA and for the project. the project is also related with the university( i mean i got the payment from financial office of university during summer and its hourly based. I didn't have assistantship during summer thats why i worked full time. If i continue the project, they will pay same way. i got 15 hrs for project. so here is the question, No specified hours for GA and i am not getting any cheque for GA i.e. it is just tuition reimbursement and i already got it. so what is next? please, your suggestions. My professor is my buddy and he definitely helps me but i have to tell him all the procedures.

Jhyamma, Your second comment is true. Is GA means 20 hrs per week even hrs are not included ? I got trouble because there is not regular DSO in school. anyway thanks.

hyamma,
"u cannot work more than 20 hrs during your school time even if u r on CPT"
Who told u that..U can work in CPT for 40 hrs during Your School hours if u r graduating that semsester..Don't believe it? Believe it..I did that .
Krs_84,
Since u GA is tied to ur tution reimbursement, it would be wise to continue ur GA and leave the other Project ..Now if ur other Project is paying u more money (tuition for 6 credits+some saving) , i would encourage u to get CPT and work for 40 hrs since it appears u r graduating that semester..CPT rules generally varies by college so Talked to ur DSO..
U can't continue to do GA and other Project at the same time( Full time, it's either or)..
How abt doing 10 hrs GA+10 hrs other Project..Ur school may allow that provided that ur other job is counted as ON-Campus JOb..

Now i got ur GA is quite diff. one where u don't receive payment but get tution waved. But somewhere it should be mentioned that u perform this much hrs of work as GA and ur this much credit tution would be waved. So confirm how many hours u r working as GA. it will be in ur record that u did this much hours of work as GA. n pyara bro, i know u can work 40 hrs under CPT but not because u r graduating, but becoz u have only 3 credits or so left for last semester. i was talking about when u have regular full load credits.

Jhyamma Bro, "n pyara bro, i know u can work 40 hrs under CPT but not because u r graduating, but becoz u have only 3 credits or so left for last semester. i was talking about when u have regular full load credits."
Correction..U can do CPT 40 hrs even when u have Full load credits..Infact i was doing 12 Credit hours regular course +1 credit CPT during my graduating semester(Fall 2008)...During Summer also did 40 hrs CPT with 6 credits of regular course+3 credits of CPT...As metioned above , CPT rule varies by univ ..Talking with ur DSO is ur best bet ..

paradeshbasiharu, payment for the GA and project is almost same amount. "How abt doing 10 hrs GA+10 hrs other Project..Ur school may allow that provided that ur other job is counted as ON-Campus JOb.." I already got GA and registered the class but the hrs didn't mentioned. If i want to another job, it will start from sep 1. I think, the project counts as on-campus job because college financial office paid for me hourly based during summer. if i continue then they will pay me same way or hourly based. I am working under same professor for GA and project. Is that fine if my professor define GA 10hrs and project (on-campus job) 10 hrs? i am sure professor will do. If GA define 20 hrs work load then that creates problems. please, any ideas?

Krs_84,
"I am working under same professor for GA and project. Is that fine if my professor define GA 10hrs and project (on-campus job) 10 hrs? i am sure professor will do."
You can defintely do that..
"If GA define 20 hrs work load then that creates problems. please, any ideas?"
Yes. Full time GA normally defines 20 hours work Load..
How abt Part time-GA(10 hrs)? Question, Will 10 hrs GA come with tution reimbursement for 6 credits? If yes..then do 10 hrs GA+10 hrs Project(Define it as On-Campus Job Like Lab Assistant etc..)

No, It's either OR ..Either GA or CPT , can't be both..
To make matter Clear..Go to ur University's Career Services..They will handle CPT..In my univ they didn't allow CPT and GA..
