I am planning on relocating to Charlotte, NC or Atlanta, GA with my family. We have done enough research on these two places with the resources available online. However, we have not been able to make up our minds as to where our new home will be. Obviously, they both have pros and cons. I want to hear from Nepalese who reside in one of the cities or their vicinities; or have experience living or visiting there before. Good school system & low crime rate, and a sizeable Nepalese community are our biggest factors to decide to chose the place. Please post your thoughts. We will appreciate it.

SouthernLife In my opinion,Atlanta is the better place to live than Charlotte, because of bigger nepalese community, easier access to international business and cultural links, religious landmarks etc. Crime is always a problem in US citites and you will see it more or less wherever you go. I think you should find a good neigborhood with less crime incidence and better public schools around Atlanta for your new home. In the United States, one of the good indicator of good neighborhood is the quality of public school quality. Researches have already shown that better the average GPA of school students, higher is the school's quality, and better is the quality in life in the neighborhood. However, houses in such neighborhoods are often expensive. You may find such neighborhoods in Atlanta better than Charllotte. Just my thoughts....... Hope this helps

mampaka, Thanks for your valuable information. How many Nepalese are living in Atlanta or its surrounding areas? I heard most of Nepalese live in Marietta area. How are public schools in Marietta? Sorry if I am asking too much! Is there any one here from Charlotte area?

Hi Southernlife There should be 50-70 Nepalese families in Atlanta and its immediate surroundings. This is just my guess and is not an offician number. Man, you already know more about Atlanta than i do.

Southern Life, I dont know much about Marietta but I have once talked to one of the oldest Nepali person living in Atlanta. As per his saying about 400 families live in the vicinity of Atlanta Downtown. You cannot ignore the crime rate in the downtown periphery.......I would include the Marietta too. Good schools, easy international access, perfect business hub, healthy gross pay are pros of Atlanta. Crime rate and the expanses (housing) are two major cons .........in my opinion.

If you decide to move to Atlanta area, think of Peach Tree City on the South West part of the Metro Atlanta. It is a bit far away from downtown but it has very good schools. There were couple of Nepalese families who used to live towards there. I am not sure if they are still there. However, if your work is in downtown, commuting is going to be pain in the neck

I live in GA. If school district is your priority, dont even think about GA. School districts in NC are much more better than in GA. Regarding the size of Nepalese community in Atlanta, there is a fairly big nepalese community. Even they have started a School for Nepalese Kids in Atlanta. But life in Atlanta is less expensive than in NC.

First of all what is your reason of relocating to one of these cities, are you transferring from your existing job? Personally, oppurtinity wise Atlanta is much better but i would not suggest you to reside in atlanta area. As Texas Redneck suggested Peach Tree City or Fayetteville is very good cities, coz it has the best schools in Ga and predominantly occupied by whites. Yeah its a bit far from downtown but not too far, and not too many nepalese reside in the this south side of Ga as opposed to North. But North is too congested and i must say crime is a bit too high.

Thanks everyone! It is quite helpful hearing from you all and getting to know a bit more about Atlanta. One of the reasons we want to move down south is to be away from frigid cold weather. We now live in New England area. Winter seems to be always long here. We would rather live in a warmer place than to deal with sleet, freezing rain, ice, and snow. RajaH, I also did not hear good things about public school in GA. It was quite shocking when I was comparing GA schools with where I now live and rest of NE areas. It is the only reason, we said, we may need to check out Charlotte area too. Charlotte is a fast growing city too. But, there seems to be very few Nepalese. Still waiting to hear from anyone from Charlotte area. Atlian, most probably one of us is transferring and one will be looking for a new job there. It is likely we will be working around downtown area. I will also research Fayetteville, GA to see how this place is. However, my priority will not be a place that is predominantly occupied by whites. A mixture of other races is important too.

Southernlife, I forgot now, there is only one state in the US that has worse School system than in GA. I also moved in GA from the Northwest. I am liking here in GA, but to give your kids better education, you need to work hard, it does not matter where you reside in. Good-luck for your move and let me knwo if you need any help.

How about midway between Charlotte and Atlanta? i.e. Greenville, SC. If you haven't heard, Greenville is one of the most fastest developing cities in the southeast. And it was also ranked top in the list of inexpensive vacation spots in the US !

Kaluman, First of all, let me tell you that you have no clue what you are writing. Better learn typing in Nepali UNICODEI if you want to get your message accorss, because English does not seem to be your cup of tea. Just lay off before making yourself a fool in front of many more people here. I have already found number of people in this thread who are wise and sharing good information. Babaal, My employment cannot be transferred to Greensville. It has to be either Charlotte or Atlanta. Thanks for posting!
