Can someone recommend a good book to me please. I have just finished reading "A short history of tractors in Ukranian" and must admit t was delightful. and please refrain from mentioning some Sidney Sheldon crap. If you could give a short description of what the book was about it would be very much appreciated. thankyou.

Asterix! What kind of 'good books' are you referring to? Self-improvement books, espionage novels, humor novels, classics, or good reads of any kind? If you are into humor you might find " THREE MEN IN A BOAT (TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG) " by Jerome K Jerome, to be a 'good' one. Sidney Sheldon is aight. I loved the "Master of the Game" and a couple others. But everyone seems to know about him. LOL! "The eye of the needle", an espionage one, by Ken Follet was pretty engaging too. Have fun

The movie adaptation of "The Green Mile" was so boring to me at least. The plot basically boiled down to a 'Sorcery' remember Michiael Duncan's character brings back the life of the crushed rat back to life. A plot of sorcery in a feature film??? Come on!! I would rather watch David Blaine perform live than on the TV screen.

I would say read any book by Salman Rushdie (except 'Fury'). Top two picks: Midnight's children and The Moor's last sigh. Notable books: - A very long journey (forgot the name of the writer, sorry). -Tin Drum (Noble prize winning writer Gunter Grass). - A Short history of the universe (Bill Bryson). -Gods of small things (Arundhati Roy). - Chlidren of the Alley (Naguib Mahfouz, another Nobel prize winner). The list is getting long so I am gonna stop right here. I have read these books and prefer them for them for the literary, not fictional value. Well, they do tell great stories but in the traditional sense. Hope you check out at least one of these. If you have read them, let me know..and I will be more than happy to recommend few others.

Correction to my earlier post. The book is 'Such a long journey' by Rohinton Mistry. I am not sure this has been made into a movie. Even if it was...I wouldnt wanna watch it coz I cannot stand that Harnett kid!

I am sorry to sidetrack Astrix's post, but have any of you read Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai? I read the reviews and know that she writes about a Nepali math tutor in East India. I am not sure where the story goes but would be interested in finding out. I hope it is not one of those skewed stories of Nepalis that Indian writers like to tell.

depends what type of book you are looking for. Here are some "Love and Death in Kathmandu" - all about royal killings "Under the banner of heaven"-about mormonism "Comrades in Miami"- about america and cuba you might have already gone throuhg samrat Upadhyay's books too. I will recommend those if you love to read incomplete stories. if you/your wife is pregnant - the best is what to expect when you are expecting

GAWD! so many books; so little time.. thank you very much for your kind suggestions. I will definitely try and read as many of them books as I can. some of them, I have already read. mostly the espionage ones. It is kind of hard for me to define "A Good Book." I used to be really into spy/adventure thrillers and science fiction when I was younger. And my favourite is still "the spy who came in from the cold" by john le carre. To be honest with you I haven't actually read many literally heavyweight kinda books. maybe I should start reading some not so heavy heavyweights ( if you know what I mean) .LOL. thank you again and I am definitely, absolutely, undoubtedly reading as many of them books as I can lay my hands on.
