I was wondering if any of you guys here drive a hyundai accent. I am thinking of buying one which has like 110k+ miles. I did the VIn check and everything is fine. The car is in good condition and engine too. For how many miles do Hyundais usually last for??Any information regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Considering the model and mileage, it seems you will be using it as a grocery express and not for long heavy driving. It should last another few years without serious problems. Appraise it on edmunds.com and kbb.com.

I love these low budget compact cars --- buy it cheap, drive 70-80K miles and sell it. My friend bought this model in 2003 and has driven about 60K miles... looks impressive. I have 2004 Elatra and put 30K miles on it... Excellent value for my budget.

Already 110 K that means its losing its life soon. Don't buy that car unless u are getting it for $500 cause now it will start giving you problems. And lemme tell you car problem is one of the biggest headache i have ever got. Hopefully u can manage to save a lil more and buy a japanese car like Honda, toyota or Nissan.

I raise the bar little bit - say pay around $1000 for this car if it is in really good condition.

If you are spending $5000 - $8000: go for used Honda, Nissan or Toyota.

If you are spending $10-12000: go for brand new Hyundai. Don't spend that much money on used cars. I am impressed by their warranty - 5 yrs bumper to bumper, 5 yrs free roadside assistance, 10 yrs powertrain warranty. I haven't had any problems in my 2004 Elantra yet except for flat tires. When I had two flat tires in 2 years, their response time was better than AAA.

Learning by experience: I bought a used car for $4,000 and spent about $3,000 in maintainance in two years. I had no accidents. At the end of two years, I was able to send it to junk yard for free (at least they accepted to come and tow it to their yard). In my calculations, I am spending less on my new car as compared to my old car (with full insurance).

I bought a new Honda. It was 18,500. You can do like this too if you think long term.

I USED an accent'93 hatchback once with 75K mi @$1K;
changed gearbox from 4 to 5 speed after it broke- cost $600
changed clutch $350
changed starter $200 or so on



Only get it if it is for free and that you don't have to depend on it from day to day.

Sabbo, personally I would refrain from buying Korean vehicles manufactured prior to 2000 or so. Backed by the excellent warranty, I would not hesitate for newer Kia and Hyundai models though.

What year is the vehicle you are considering? What it is the seller's asking price? I strongly recommend you to do some reasearch on edmunds.com before you make any decision. That site was a life saver to me when I was in the market for a used car last year. You may also want to visit autos.msn.com for more info. Do check the True Market Value (TMV) and Cost of Ownership/True Cost to own (or sth like that) in edmunds. Also check the reliablility ratings on msn. I also suggest you to read the forums on both sites. Be more attentive to the ones describing Accents of the same year and mileage equal or higher than 110K.

I have one hyundai Accent '99 at $12K. Driving it for six years and have a mileage of 80K. No roadside problem (so far). Drove around the states... NY, AL, FL, VA, MD, NJ you name it. One complain is its horse-power (~86HP, at street lights they even honk at you). Otherwise it is smooth, extremely reliable, despite its bad reputation.

Changed all tires
Have religiously changed oil every 3 months.
At 50000 changed Tranny oil and filter ($100).
Changed brake pads ($50).
Had to change a battery and alternator ($450).
It does not hold its market value, though.

A few car will beat this ratio.

Bought Honda Prelude (1989) at 60000 miles. Paid $5000 but broke down in 2 years. Paid for alternator change $500) 80000 miles. Traded it.

M/P = 20000/5500 = 3.6 miles/$1.

As i said, the car is in a good condition. As far as i know, the seller has been driving the car for about a year now and has made several interstate trips without any problems.
