What could be expected from impotent prime minister who strongly lacks leadership... well except lickin' his lips and expressing himself in nervousness that even Indian leaders get confused. Nepal's Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba met top Indian leaders in New Delhi today.

Deuba signed four Memorandums of Understanding with India, including one for building a pipeline for the supply of Indian Oil products.

But the real reason for the visit was more to do with security than economics as Deuba placed before the Indian leadership a list of arms he needs to fight against the Maoists.

Nepal pays India just 30 per cent of the cost of arms it buys. Since the Maoist insurgency started in 1996, India has already supplied weaponry worth Rs 500 crores and Nepal still hasn't paid for this.

"We have been helping Nepal in the past," said Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

Nepal's latest shopping list includes:


36 Rakshak Mine Protected Vehicles. Fifty were supplied earlier.
10,000 INSAS rifles. Nepal already has 23,000 of these.
An unspecified number of helicopters.
Bullet-proof jackets, helmets and grenades.
Ammunition re-supply.
For India, fighting its own insurgencies, the dilemma is whether it can spare the equipment its own soldiers need so badly.

Close security ties

However, New Delhi's response to the Nepalese request indicates a closer security relationship.

In giving the army more arms, New Delhi will strengthen the King even while it's official policy remains to encourage a return to democracy.

For the Maoists, the battle lines are clearly drawn. Kathmandu and New Delhi are both enemies working to destroy them.

And for India, the question really is not whether to help Nepal with more arms supplies, but the extent to which it can assist its neighbour

The Maoist rebellion has not only devastated Nepal internally in every way imaginable; it has also weakened Nepal's position further vis-a-vis India.

I really don't know what to do these days: stop reading nepalnews altogether (yes, that would be one heck of an escapist route), or return to Nepal for good. It's real hard to be a mukdarshak when the country is going down the drain.

When we Nepali fail to understand our PM's mother tongue, how can we expect Indians to understand his broken hindi? Not so long ago he gave an interview to an Indian TV channel, in Hindi-aangregi. The face of the interviewer said it all! Poor chap looked completely dumbfounded. I can't remember another Nepali PM who tries his utter best to make a fool of himself every time he goes public.And you should have seen him deliver his mumbo-jumbo to a menifestedly aloof Indian PM in Hyderabad house. I can never understand why our ministers have to act so subserviently each time they confront an international leader of any clout.They could literally have begged! We are poor all right, but let us not lose our dignity, no matter what
