Hi, I am wondering what you would need to do if someone tried to hack your computer. Today... I saw it. Actually... someone did get into my computer and changed hotmail, ebay passwords. I was able to put down his/her IP add. What should I do? Any suggestions? Thanks...

If someone tries to hack your computer, change your ip to something else, if your isp allows! And I did not get how someone changed your hotmail and ebay account. But one thing I can promise you, it is someone you know , someone close and maybe someone who you told the password to. Post the ip and I can locate it if it is not a dynamic ip. Give me the time frame on when it happened!!

Also, did you download and run any executables from unreliable sources? I would say that you should use your task manager (I am assuming you're using windows) to make sure that all the programs that are currently running are trustworthy. You can just google the executable name, and it usually takes you to a microsoft, your PC manufacturer, or some other website that tells you whether the program is a virus or not. If you cannot do this, then I would reinstall the OS. If your computer has been compromised, then reinstalling it should do the trick. And from next time onwards, you need to run an updated virus scanner before running executables.

thanks ut2 but it was definitely hacked via spyware. that was how he was able to get my passwords. i ran spydoctor and removed a bunch of the harmful codes including a trojan horse that my norton antivirus apparently didn't locate. i really want to know if spyware blocker programs and a new firewall program would be enough to prevent this from happening again. anyone with suggestions?

zozo, 10.6.17.10 is a internal network IP address so the intruder might be someone using your network. People have to be really careful about using others computers or letting others use your computer. Because, a malicious user can install spywares in the computer which can show them everything that you do on the computer including each and every key stroke and the screen shots as well. So people, be careful about letting other people use your computer. As a precautionary measure, if you're using XP or win 2000 you can create guest user accounts who cannot install any softwares onto the computer. Safe computing to all!

Can you call cops on hackers? I recommed running spybot and adware, and running anti virus program too. i recommend symentic for anti virus. After that installing Service pack 2 would be the best way to go. I love service pack 2. keeps you safe from spywares and pop ups. Also, download necessary patches from the Windows update. Actually, set it to automatic update. I like Neo's idea of having guest accounts.
