Hi Guys,

I am trying to pursue my Master degree in US. Any suggestion on what would be the hot career to study? I am soley interested in the job perspective. I do have a Bachelor in Comp. Engneering but now want to switch to something fruitful in the long run. I don't want to get laid off again, if u know what i mean. Any ideas will be highly appreciated.

I would suggest you to do something in financing.....choose a career field which has to have a direct personal contact (not phone or e-mail) with customer that way there is little chance to be laid off........
That's my thought....if anybody has anything else...please do suggest coz i am looking something strong career in future as well........

perhaps getting a PHD in Social science.. suddenly there seems to be a strong demand for this very unique breed. The way the world has evolved.. globalization, technology, terrorism..the ways of doing business has changed and I guess who better than social scientists to study what is happening and provide effective solutions through various business tools.

so good luck in your quest of re-inventing yourself.

Some of the fields where u can do a masters and get a job in are nursing, social work, teaching, etc. Try these, social work and teaching does not need pre-requisite or so I was told, not sure though!!

PHYSICAL THERAPY!! dats the way to go.. u can do it part-time and do something else too or u can do it full time.. you can open up your own place or work for hospitals or travel to individual homes. the money is good and the field is very open.. u can do anything...literally..ANYTHIng..soo many options available..there is a physical therapy branch in Baltimore or u can go to DC to uhhh something..george wash or something.. anyways.. PHYSICAL THERAPY.. where u can provide number 1 satisfaction to the health of customers by getting them back in shape, ready to take on the world..

Try knowledge management, if such a course is offered. If you have knowledge in today's knowledge society, well may be that's the only currency that you will ever want or need. They say that designations like integrator, connector, transformer will become hot hot hot in the future. I don't know...but these designations do sound like components of an electronic/electric circuit! A little demeaning, but hey if the money is good, why not?

Well, the idea behind knowledge management (i think) is to create a workforce [at least in the private sector] that resembles an integrated chip that is progresssively more and more efficient and more and more cost-effective - in other words productive - and also more and more connected and well - integrated. As an integrator, connector or even transformer, you would be in a position to restructure companies, NGOs, governments, donor bodies, and advise CEOs , Director Generals and governments.

Already the world bank, undp, usaid, idrc, cida and even gtz - all donors with lots of money they don't know where to put - are buying into this knowledge management craze. I am a little skeptical...but I think this is already a well-entrenched trend.

If nothing else, a consultancy should do right?

Nursing is the hottest career in the US now. As a matter of fact, there will be demand for nurses until 2010 in the US and in Europe. I am intro Digital Communications and Technology and whenever I search for jobs, I see a lot of openings for RN (registered nurse).

So, I would study Nursing

One piece of advice: don't choose your master's degree in hopes of landing that hot job when you graduate. Most of these hot jobs tend to be fads and they grow out quickly much faster than you think; it's all about timing.

I can only assume that you receiving a pink slip was due to inexperience. I urge you to give it another go with the degree you have; a technical degree has the capabilities to go beyond its normal boundaries. Depending on your abilities and interest, getting a graduate degree that complements your undergraduate degree would be more appropriate if you are keen on studying again. This may be business related such as MBA (only if you can get into top 25 schools otherwise don't even bother) if you like consulting, etc. Another option is to explore a topic in CS/CE/SE in more depth. The tech sector is still hot IMHO.

I've got a BS in business/MIS myself and now completing MSE in software engineering. My interest in doing a graduate degree developed while working and very much interested in SDLC, and not because I thought I was going to land that 'piping hot job'. Unless you can afford to gamble (with your tuition fees, effort and time) I would think about what degrees interests me the most if I were you, rather than chasing the rainbow.

I tend to look at trendy hot jobs equally in par with fashion. I still got those super bell bottoms in my closet I thought were way cool a few years back...
