You can possibly, but there are certain factors that will decide your success. Like:

# How good are you in maths? Have you taken Calculus ever?
# How much of a problem solver are you? Do problems excite you or bore you?
# Do you like learning new languages such as Spanish or Chinese say?

These are my personal views. May differ for other people though.

If you put your mind into it, it is possible. People with microbiology background have become very good Java developers. Just need to have determination and perseverance and you will succeed.

@chicagoan
People with microbiology and people with arts and humanities background may have different kind of challenges. Again it is my personal opinion.

My personal experiences say I have seen those people enjoy programming who are into learning new stuffs, technology, languages from other countries, solving math problems, knitting patterns for a glove, sweater just simple examples. Their mind set ups are different than those who are in fashion or some trivial things in life, but again this may not hold true all the time. I have seen people with very good fashion sense and eccentric life style also excelling in programming. You do not have to be a geek always.
But yes we there has to be determination and perseverance in great doses. It is all about failing and failing until you succeed. Basically learning to fail. And not many people like that though. I read that phrase 'learning to fail' in NY Times some years back while reading about a successful woman computer programmer who had some interesting stories to share.

If you really want to do it and put your mind to it, you can do it. When you doubt yourself that is when you fail.

People have landed lucrative jobs just by learning from YouTube videos.

Anybody who does programming knows very well what it is to do "iterations" and every iteration will compile your code to what you have been looking for, it is not plausible at least the first time. With only one iteration, you can succeed that is a very far-fetched thing to say, that is why they say, "fail and fail until you succeed" or "learning to fail".

So coming back to what Chicagoan said above, yes, you need to put your heart and mind into it, but be also ready to fail with your attempts in programming because it is not always when you doubt you fail, there are so many things going behind that we cannot simply track and know in the first takes and we end up failing in our code. I was hinting in that direction, not intending to say that you will fail in programming, if you doubt yourself.

I really admire people who can go through the drill and work against the grain and say that you can learn programming in spite of your background, life situations and what nots. "Learning to fail" is just a paradoxical statement that goes with programming. Though I get it that people like to hear the other, i.e. "Learning to win".

Not a fan of programming and don't have science or math background but I did a stint with processing SQL statements with JDBC for a couple of months back in those days.

If you are having fun doing it, you'll most likely learn a lot sooner.
1000 times more fun than leaning Javaskript at least in my experience.
