For those of you who have children, do you speak to them in Nepali or English? Even though I grew up here, my parents never spoke to me in English and I hate it when others speak to their kids in English. I know I am not going to speak to my kids in English.

My mother spoke Nepali,my father Newari and my nanny spoke Hindi/Gujrati to us.
I plan to hire Mandarine speaking nanny for my kids in future.

my parents mostly spoke nepali to me as i was growing up.
and ofcourse, my future kids are going to learn nepali along with other languages!
:)

and even though nepali parents speak to their kids in english, the kids still understand nepali and speak nepali! i have seen that in most of the families!

Monday, Wednesday and every other Fridays - nepali speaking day; weekends - English speaking day; every other Friday- sign-language. My dog is smarter than your honor child.

this is a serious topic, i guess. i, for one, have given it thoughts time and again. ideally, i would want my kids to be able to speak both nepali and english fluently in native accents. it would be bizarre and awful feeling for parents to hear your kid speaking nepali like an american would perhaps speak when taught to speak nepali. i would not want that (ideally).

so here is what i am planning.

1) after my kids are 2 ish years old, i will send them to nepal and enroll them in a nepalese school. primary education in US is not one of the best in the world anyways. and looking at the math disabilty of american kids, i would rather not send them to american schools. i don't want my kids to use calculator/computer for simple arithmetics.

2) i will bring them back to US for high schooling (after/at grade 8). that will give them umpteen time to catch up with the american culture and accent and not forget nepali and native accent as well.

i think this is the best solution that i can think of at the moment. i have seen kids born and raised here. no matter how educated and concerned their parents are over teaching their kids to speak both english and nepali seamlessly, 9/10 times they fail to learn "thet" nepali. i don't want that and don't want to take a risk either.

Please feel free to argue who disagree with my points. Coz i am not experienced in this.

LooTe, that is exactly what my plan is too. That's pretty amazing! I started schooling in the US since 5th grade. I have no problems speaking Nepali and my English does not sound like I am from a different country. I feel that my kids should go the same route as well. I am still too young to even have children, but, that is definitely one of the options for me.

Parents here don't have to speak to their kids in English to help them learn it. They will learn English automatically once they start going to school. I have also seen many parents who speak to their kids in English so they can show off. Who cares? Everybody speaks English in the US. Dang!

i don't agree with loote...i don't like maths loote..i hate it, sometimes i need to do maths calculation for the research project i am working and i hate that....he he he

i don't think its good idea to send your little kids to nepal just to learn english and be good in maths...don't you feel bad to keep your kids away from you when they need you and can learn from you more during those days.I have seen people feeling insecurity in many ways to raise kids in USA...if you think in deep insecurity is everywhere...it just depends the person. and hey when you bring your kids when they are in 8th grad again you will feel ohh they are growing up and they might date girl or they might do something you don't want..and i have seen other things sending kids to parents back in nepal...and believe it or not..they think that their parents are in USA and acts like spoiled brat....
and in my opinion its wrong as life is full of worries..you will keep on worrying about everybody you are related until you die...thats truth..

Very interesting topic. I agree with Loote. However, I'm not sure if I'll be able send him away though.

My parents taught me Nepali from the beginning while they themselves talked in Newari. Though grown up in a homogenous Newar society, I didn't choose to talk in Newari, consequently I became more comfortable in Nepali.

I don't know what I will do with my children though, time will tell. :)
