I believe complete democracy means the people who are selected/ elected by the people/junta rule the country and decide what is right or wrong for the country. But, for any mass of people to select the right person from their mass, at least 50% of the people should have a intellectual level so that they understand what is right and wrong and select the right person. In context of nepal, where merely not even 40% of the people are literate, how can the people with this level of intellectuality select the right person? i believe the nepalese are not capable of selecting the right person own their own..and the person selected by such a mass of people is bound to be not the appropriate person.. that has what happened to the previous person who were elected to be in the parliament/ sansad...the wrong person reached the position and the consequence manifested in the form of crisis we are facing now....So, i guess a form of controlled democracy is the need of Nepal in the current prospective... what do u guys think?

It does not take reading and writing skills to know what is good for oneself. Just because the majority of farmers do not know how to read and write does not mean they don't have a highly sophisticated understanding of nature, of the weather, of fluid dynamics, of soil science, of botany, of zoology, and of their society ... and their ability to tell right from wrong, good from bad, and to know what leaders to trust and what leaders not to trust (and thus who to vote for) ... that has nothing to do with whether they have been to school or not. Reading a newspaper is not essential for figuring out national and international issues (and who to vote for) as long as there are uncensored radio and television stations, and the ability to make and receive phonecalls from friends and relatives in other parts of the country and the world...

Mr. Khadka, Looks like you obviously don't understand what complete democracy means...or I should say have a wrong understanding of it. And you say you need to be literate to understand democracy?...hmmmm

I think haude_ko_bhai has shits for his brain and brain in his shits. Mr. Khadka brings out a very interesting point. In a country where more than 60% of the citizen is illeterate, how do you make them understand the benefits of national and internation policies that directly and indirectly affect their lives. We live in a country where people choose their candidates by the importance of the symbols in their lives, and not by the policies they abide by. Democracy is a system that can flourish if everyone agree to play this game in all fairness. Democracy will never flourish in Nepal, its going to be another mistake, if we let it another chance. Say no to Democracy, TODAY!

Vincentbodega is another example why being literate is not a necessary condition for understanding democracy. How did you manage to mix up international policies with democarcy? Definition of democracy for you Mr. Bodega (in case you don't know): 1. Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives. 2. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community. Now, tell me again that you need to be literate to understand those two principles. You need democracy to increase literacy and not the other way round...

I just have one statement to you then, how did this panacea to all social problems fail in Nepal, even when we took a stab at it for 15 years? One of the prime attributes of democracy is government by people, as you have pointed out. What if the people we are talking about has no idea of governing? Let me simply things for you. Lets say you are married and have six kids. Lets say you are such a proponent of democracy that you said I will run my family in a democratic way. Now the question is would you let your kids decide how to run your family? Where to invest and where to put your savings? Would you? I will be waiting to hear from you about how rediculous this example is. But, whether you agree or not, for the people to be able govern, you need able/capable people. Quantity (vote) does not always justify democracy, its the quality that matters too. Look at Nepal, if the prices go up, students come out in the streets and burn vehicles. is this the kind of governing you want? No to democracy! hell no!!!

And dont tell you what I am and what I am not! I wouldnt want you to try and decipher me and my stature, it simply wouldn't be fair for you. The best you could do is, speak your mind clearly, if you have one that is. I will just let you handle that aspect!

Mr. Bodega...it failed bacause the past 15 years of democracy as we all know it, is not a democracy in a real sense. It was not inclusive and the drafting of the constitution did not have people's participation, and so it was a failure right from the start. And why? Because NC, UML and the palace fooled us all...what they did was to define what the rest of the people ought to be choosing because they thought they knew it all. Got it? And to answer your question...this is where you are mixing up things again. You give the kids the opportunity to participate in running the house, you hear what they have to say and the issues they have to raise. What you don't do is shut them up because you think they are kids, and they should not learn to think for themselves. It does not mean that everything they say has to be implemented, it means that you listen and be aware of their needs and if it makes sense incorporate them. And I am sure in most of the circumstances your kids are not going to worry about where you are investing and accumulating your savings. And if they do ask...certainly you can listen to them can't you ...and who knows maybe they will surprise you will a brilliant idea they just learned in class...NO?

what do you mean by constitution did not have people's participation? you want each and every Nepali to have an input in the making of the constitution? You put forward two factions that spoiled it all for us: the parties and the palace. Who do you think will be writing the constitution this time? And your second paragraph seems to counter the first. So you mean to say that you are gonna have people participate in the process of making decision but no matter what the majority is, "you" gets to decide what's going to be implemented. Is this is how you forsee democracy? Again, you said they might have learned something in "class." The problem here is there's been no "class" for these participants in Nepal. Without knowledge and practise no amount of intelligence in a kid can fly an airplane and I am not willing to be a passenger in this flight, which is bound to crash because of indecisiveness. I would rather have ONE person take charge and do his/her best in this flight. Democracy should be used as toilet paper!

My understanding was; Democracy = 'You decide'. Very few people want 'Bad' for themselves. It's proven successful as compared to other utopian visions. Use Science to develop....but don't teach people how to s*it!

Mr. Bodega, Looks like Nepe's effort to educate people on Constituent Assembly did not reach you, so here is something you might want to read about on participation of the people. http://insn.org/?p=1431 and after this if you still want to use democracy as your toilet paper...I must say that is your choice...haina?

haude_ko_bhai, Two is the secret number, because thats the number of individuals I listen to: first is the God Himself and second is "VincentBodega." I dont think Nepe falls in either of these two categories, so... God has given me a set of brains that I can use to think for myself, I dont need no Nepe or any bhais to do the thinking for me. kb46ta, yes, democracy in literal terms does mean "you decide," and I can sorta understand your sentiments on "who would want bad for themselves." The factor you have failed to accept here is ignorance. Ignorance is such a poison in democracy that what people think is good for them actually might be just the opposite. If you are allowed to pick the best apples from a vineyard and if you dont know what attributes you need to look for that, you might be picking something that Mr. X said was best. But at the same time you lose your "democracy." So there, you want such idiocy in the name of democracy?

The whole essence I think. Doesn't matter Mr X is a bad guy! Every human being lives for himself or herself. "Hello! we are just one person thinking!' Funny! but true! For god's sake!!! first thing you want to know is you are deciding...... irrespective ? good or bad...
