Maoists open fire in Saptari; abduct 5

KATHMANDU, Aug 25 - Maoists are reported to have abducted five villagers after opening fire at a Dalit settlement in Jagatpur of Saptari district, Thursday morning.
According to our district correspondent, a team of journalists and human rights activists has headed towards the site.

Unconfirmed reports said the Maoist might have attacked the villagers after the latter spread word about the Maoist misdeeds.

Details of the incident are awaited.

A group of Maoist rebels had raped at least 25 women from the same village last week and threatened the villagers of dire consequences if their crime was revealed.

The victims, however, recounted their harrowing experience to a group of human rights activists and journalists who had reached the village on Monday. (dds)
