A Nepali woman went to Pashupatinath with her 7 year old boy.
Boy: Look mom a cow, can we get some milk?
Mom: No son we can not, it's just a statue and they continued.
Boy again said: Look mom the tiger, will it attack us?
Mom: No beta its just a statue. It won't.
Boy: Look mom a dragon, will it spit fire on us?
Mom: It won't dear...its just a statue. Then they both enter into the templ...e premises.
Mom: Look son God, He is the master of the universe and will guide you. Please bow down in front of him and show some respect.
Son: Sorry mama, He can't be God. Its just a statue. If He is the master of the universe than just tell him to talk to me.
Mom was baffled.
Just to let you know, Vedas, Bhagwad Gita , Bible, Quran and most of other sacred scriptures prohibits Idol worship. Please read your scripture today. Please do not put God in a box.

The Vedas: "Andhatama pravishanti ye asambhuti mupaste"
"They enter darkness, those who worship the natural elements" (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). "They sink deeper in darkness, those who worship sambhuti." [Yajurveda 40:9]
Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol, etc.

Bhagvad Gita: "Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures." [Bhagavad Gita 7:20]

"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:"
"Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God." [The Bible, Exodus 20:3-5]

Al-Qur'an: "It has been revealed to you, and to those before you that if you ever commit idol worship, all your works will be nullified, and you will be with the losers." [Al-Qur'an 39:65]
"God does not forgive idolatry,* but He forgives lesser offenses for whomever He wills. Anyone who sets up idols beside God, has forged a horrendous offense." [Al-Qur'an 4:48]

Have a good Tuesday. Please do not give up your right to think to anyone. Let not your fore-fathers make decision of your salvation.
May God guide all of us. Ameen !!!

your Nepali brother

Then the mom said, "for a boy who wanted to milk a statue, you are talking too big now boy!!"

They then proceeded to walk and the boy opened Sajha and saw the posting by Nepaliguy1982 who advocated for not worshipping the false idols/statues.

Boy: Mom, look the internet says we shouldn't worship in the temples and statues of Gods.

Mom: No beta, it's just an internet post; most of them are bs and should be treated with a grain of salt. Don't believe everything you read.

Religion defies logic, you either have to deny the entire concept of religion OR let others live the life they want to live. You can't be preaching that this scripture (Vedas, Bible, Quran) is right and that is wrong. Either say this whole concept is wrong, or don't say anything at all.

I am always surprised when smart people follow religious books which are nothing but stories. Why would you want to take the words of Bible, Koran, Hindi scriptures as absolute truth?

Believing in an unknown power that created us is different and acceptable but following ancient scriptures to the T just makes it seem like people are not using their brains.

I say, vote for the unknown power, show respect and love for humanity, without following dogmatic norms put forth by organized religions.

If we look back in the history, many of the disaster have occurred because of the misuse of science. Science is powerful but the same science can be dangerous if put in the hands of ignorant. Atomic bombings, nuclear disasters, cyber war-fare, biological weapons such as Anthrax are some of the examples of the misuse of science. Science works with solid evidences and empirical facts. If something is out of our senses and mind, we usually label that as illogical or abnormal. Vedas were discovered by extra sensory faculties of Rishis. Some examples of extra sensory faculties are clairvoyance, clairaudience, levitating effects defying gravity, mentally controlling physical objects (ancient Vedic Vimanas could also be mentally controlled by bringing coherent thoughts pattern) etc. There are realities that normal human senses cannot register to our brain. For example, infrared wave, ultra-wave etc. Our eyes cannot even see the movement of air! How can we rely on such senses which doesn't even let us see the air? Plus, this senses are registering illusory sensation; for example, blueness of the sky. Blueness of the sky is just an appearance because blue light reach faster to our eyes. If we tilt the axis of our earth such that green light reach faster than the sky would appear green all the time! Science has its limitation because it relies on these faulty senses and limited mind. We cannot put the whole universe in a laboratory and explain the cause of this universe. Therefore, some other technique is required. Rishis went beyond their senses and mind and understood the reality as it is. What is sound? You will understand sound only when you hear it. What is sight? You will understand sight only when you see things. Similarly, to understand Vedas, you must experience the subtle realities of the Vedas! When you realize that Vedic mantras really do work, then you will understand Vedas. Otherwise, trying to explain Vedas to someone who gets excited by seeing a naked lady is like trying to empty the ocean drop by drop. Wise people will never do that. There are certain qualifications which lets student fit to understand Vedas. One such qualification is self-control. Can you control your desires? If yes, you are fit to study Vedas!

Instead of debating with opinions, why don't we debate with facts..the way Science does?

You mention atomic bombings, nuclear disasters that science brought upon us. How many died of these "disasters?" The only atomic bombing with major casualty was the WWII bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The total number of casualties was around 109,000. Nuclear disaster has yet to directly claim a life except in the case of Chernobyl where documented number of deaths was around 31. Even if we tally up the indirect deaths (cancer etc due to the leak), the toll doesn't exceed 10,000. So far 120,000 against Science.

It's hard to tally up the number for casualties from biological warfare, but one major war involving this was Japanese bombings of China which claimed around 3000 lives (http://www.peace.ca/masscasualties.htm). Some claim the bombings of Nangbi could have caused casualties of over 400,000. Let's include holocaust as gas chambers were used, so that total count goes above 2 million now. In total, casualties directly related to Science is less than 3 million.

Now, let's see the tally in religion's favor. I present to you, this page from wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_war
Between 1095 to 1618, total number of casualties (remember this is when WMDs were not even existent) ranged anywhere from 8M to 23M!!!!

So let's repeat your sentence now, "If we look back in the history, many of the disaster have occurred because of the misuse of science."

Does that sound right?

Now there are few critical points to be made:
1. Casualties related to religion were directly related to religion, i.e. religion was the cause. Science in itself was NEVER the cause for the casualties reported above, Science was merely a mean. This is a big difference.

2. You might argue the difference in period, I'd argue it is much easier to kill more now that it was in the past. The effect of religious killing lingers, just watch our neighbors fighting in the name of religion.

I am not taking anybody's side; but when a factually wrong statement is made, I feel it begs refuting.

Can there be meaning without GOD?
If there is no GOD, then man and the universe are doomed. Like prisoners condemned to death, we await our unavoidable execution. There is no GOD, and there is no immortality! And what is the consequence of this? It means that life itself is absurd. It means that the life we have is without ultimate significance, value, or purpose.

My point is science in the hands of ignorant people is dangerous. Whether 1 person dies or 1 million, it is a loss. That 1 person could be the world for somebody!

nepaliguy1982, Zakir Naik is a hypocrite. He will delude your mind. He memorize everything like a parrot. He doesn't have any respect to other religion beside Islam.

Ujl, that's true. But what about religion? Don't you think religious power in the wrong hands could be equally dangerous? Don't you think wrong interpretation of scripture could lead to mass destruction? Case in point Islamic fundamentalist. Problem with religion is that there is no way to determine whose interpretation is right and whose is wrong. Science has empirical validation, religion just doctrine.

Kiddo, a true religion will be as practical as science; otherwise, what is the use of such religion. The problem we are facing is that people are misinterpreting religions based on their personal selfish propaganda. This is not the problem of religion itself, like atomic bombing is not the problem of science itself. The real problem here is ignorance. We can either fly airplane from Chicago to KTM or hit the twin towers, choice is ours. Also, we can use religion to unite people or use it to divide and do mass massacre, again choice is ours. I think awareness is the main concern. If there is a religion that bring higher awareness in human then I consider that a true religion. A true religion will never conflict science. True religion itself is science.

Uji, Kiddo has totally debunked your theories so please come up with something that you have verified instead of trying to force your dogmas and beliefs.

"If there is a religion that bring higher awareness in human then I consider that a true religion. A true religion will never conflict science."

Are you saying all religions that exist currently are not true religion? since no religion has brought verifiable higher awareness and since most religions conflict with science in not being able to prove the existence of a higher being.

Common Concept of God in Hinduism:

Hinduism is commonly perceived as a polytheistic religion. Indeed, most Hindus would attest to this, by professing belief in multiple Gods. While some Hindus believe in the existence of three gods, some believe in thousands of gods, and some others in thirty three crore i.e. 330 million Gods. However, learned Hindus, who are well versed in their scriptures, insist that a Hindu should believe in and worship only one God.

The major difference between the Hindu and the Muslim perception of God is the common Hindus’ belief in the philosophy of Pantheism. Pantheism considers everything, living and non-living, to be Divine and Sacred. The common Hindu, therefore, considers everything as God. He considers the trees as God, the sun as God, the moon as God, the monkey as God, the snake as God and even human beings as manifestations of God!

Islam, on the contrary, exhorts man to consider himself and his surroundings as examples of Divine Creation rather than as divinity itself. Muslims therefore believe that everything is God’s i.e. the word ‘God’ with an apostrophe ‘s’. In other words the Muslims believe that everything belongs to God. The trees belong to God, the sun belongs to God, the moon belongs to God, the monkey belongs to God, the snake belongs to God, the human beings belong to God and everything in this universe belongs to God.

Thus the major difference between the Hindu and the Muslim beliefs is the difference of the apostrophe ‘s’. The Hindu says everything is God. The Muslim says everything is God’s.

2.

Concept of God according to Hindu Scriptures:

We can gain a better understanding of the concept of God in Hinduism by analysing Hindu scriptures.

BHAGAVAD GITA

The most popular amongst all the Hindu scriptures is the Bhagavad Gita.

Consider the following verse from the Gita:

"Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures."
[Bhagavad Gita 7:20]

The Gita states that people who are materialistic worship demigods i.e. ‘gods’ besides the True God.

UPANISHADS:

The Upanishads are considered sacred scriptures by the Hindus.

The following verses from the Upanishads refer to the Concept of God:

  1. "Ekam evadvitiyam"
"He is One only without a second."
    [Chandogya Upanishad 6:2:1]1

  2. "Na casya kascij janita na cadhipah."
"Of Him there are neither parents nor lord."
    [Svetasvatara Upanishad 6:9]2

  3. "Na tasya pratima asti"
"There is no likeness of Him."
    [Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:19]3

  4. The following verses from the Upanishad allude to the inability of man to imagine God in a particular form:

"Na samdrse tisthati rupam asya, na caksusa pasyati kas canainam."

"His form is not to be seen; no one sees Him with the eye."
    [Svetasvatara Upanishad 4:20]4

THE VEDAS
Vedas are considered the most sacred of all the Hindu scriptures. There are four principal Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda and Atharvaveda.

  1. Yajurveda
The following verses from the Yajurveda echo a similar concept of God:

    1. "na tasya pratima asti
"There is no image of Him."
      [Yajurveda 32:3]5

    2. "shudhama poapvidham"
      "He is bodyless and pure."
      [Yajurveda 40:8]6

    3. "Andhatama pravishanti ye asambhuti mupaste"
"They enter darkness, those who worship the natural elements" (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). "They sink deeper in darkness, those who worship sambhuti."
      [Yajurveda 40:9]7

Sambhuti means created things, for example table, chair, idol, etc.

    4. The Yajurveda contains the following prayer:
"Lead us to the good path and remove the sin that makes us stray and wander."
      [Yajurveda 40:16]8

      5[Yajurveda by Devi Chand M.A. page 377]

      6[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Giffith page 538]

      7[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Giffith page 538]

      8[Yajurveda Samhita by Ralph T. H. Griffith page 541]

  2. Atharvaveda
The Atharvaveda praises God in Book 20, hymn 58 and verse 3:
    1. "Dev maha osi"
      "God is verily great"
      [Atharvaveda 20:58:3]9

  3. Rigveda
    1. The oldest of all the vedas is Rigveda. It is also the one considered most sacred by the Hindus. The Rigveda states in Book 1, hymn 164 and verse 46:
"Sages (learned Priests) call one God by many names."
      [Rigveda 1:164:46]

    2. The Rigveda gives several different attributes to Almighty God. Many of these are mentioned in Rigveda Book 2 hymn 1.

Among the various attributes of God, one of the beautiful attributes mentioned in the Rigveda Book II hymn 1 verse 3, is Brahma. Brahma means ‘The Creator’. Translated into Arabic it means Khaaliq. Muslims can have no objection if Almighty God is referred to as Khaaliq or ‘Creator’ or Brahma. However if it is said that Brahma is Almighty God who has four heads with each head having a crown, Muslims take strong exception to it.

Describing Almighty God in anthropomorphic terms also goes against the following verse of Yajurveda:

      "Na tasya Pratima asti"
"There is no image of Him."
      [Yajurveda 32:3]

Another beautiful attribute of God mentioned in the Rigveda Book II hymn 1 verse 3 is Vishnu. Vishnu means ‘The Sustainer’. Translated into Arabic it means Rabb. Again, Muslims can have no objection if Almighty God is referred to as Rabb or 'Sustainer' or Vishnu. But the popular image of

9[Atharveda Samhita vol 2 William Dwight Whitney page 910]

Vishnu among Hindus, is that of a God who has four arms, with one of the right arms holding the Chakra, i.e. a discus and one of the left arms holding a ‘conch shell’, or riding a bird or reclining on a snake couch. Muslims can never accept any image of God. As mentioned earlier this also goes against Svetasvatara Upanishad Chapter 4 verse 19.

      "Na tasya pratima asti"
"There is no likeness of Him"

The following verse from the Rigveda Book 8, hymn 1, verse 1 refer to the Unity and Glory of the Supreme Being:

    3. "Ma cid anyad vi sansata sakhayo ma rishanyata"
"O friends, do not worship anybody but Him, the Divine One. Praise Him alone."
      [Rigveda 8:1:1]10

    4. "Devasya samituk parishtutih"
"Verily, great is the glory of the Divine Creator."
      [Rigveda 5:1:81]11

Brahma Sutra of Hinduism:

The Brahma Sutra of Hinduism is:

"Ekam Brahm, dvitiya naste neh na naste kinchan"

"There is only one God, not the second; not at all, not at all, not in the least bit."

Thus only a dispassionate study of the Hindu scriptures can help one understand the concept of God in Hinduism.

as from the sun." The Prophecy confirms:

  1. The name of the Prophet as Ahmed since Ahmed is an Arabic name. Many translators misunderstood it to be ‘Ahm at hi’ and translated the mantra as "I alone have acquired the real wisdom of my father".

  2. Prophet was given eternal law, i.e. the Shariah.

  3. The Rishi was enlightened by the Shariah of Prophet Muhammad. The Qur’an says in Surah Saba Chapter 34 verse 28 (34:28):

"We have not sent thee but as a universal (Messenger) to men, giving them glad tidings and warning them (against sin), but most men understand not."

I see a major flaw in ujl's analogy of flying plane from Chicago to KTM. Religions do not have such cut and dry, any in fact, destination. They say the destination the state of consciousness, moksha or things to these effects, which are very subjective to the interpretation of individuals.

It's a good way to control people, however, by defining such destinations that suits my purpose. And that's how the religions have been used.

Guys 0+0 is never equals to 1. Nothing + Nothing can not create this tremendous power. Supreme power exists and that's whom we call God.

I do not deny science but these laws we are invented were created by Supreme being. God created time to begin with.

The threat that every religion uses to tame humans is always heaven and hell. But has anyone been there and come back to give anyone a factual account ?? Nope. Every religious leader reverts to faith when it comes to logic and reasoning.
Talk about religious power in the wrong hands ? Tea Party hijacking us govt. causing a shut down.
