Nepali author demolishes king's blue blood claim http://www.southasiamonitor.org/2008/May/news/28sal2.shtml By Sudeshna Sarkar Kathmandu, May 27: On the verge of being stripped of his crown and evicted from the royal palace, Nepal's distressed King Gyanendra now faces another blow - the demolition of the "myth" that his dynasty is descended from India's Rajputs, a dynasty of warrior kings known for their valour and blue blood.
Nepali author and researcher Subodh Kumar Singh contends that the Shah kings of Nepal, once revered as the incarnation of Hindu god Vishnu, are actually the descendants of the Magars, a Mongoloid people who inhabited western Nepal and occupied a low position in social hierarchy. They were dismissively described as 'matwalis' - a people known for their drinking prowess. Singh, a political specialist at the American Embassy in Kathmandu, has been researching for over a decade the history of various communities who enjoyed a position of power in the past but then lost their glory and plummetted to the bottom of the social ladder. In his new book, "The return of the Mauryas", Singh says the Shah kings began creating the fiction that they were descended from the Rajput kings of India in order to hide their origin and commend greater reverence from their subjects. However, several pieces of evidence belie the claim. "During his last days, Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of the Shah dynasty, gathered all his relatives, courtiers and officers around him and advised them on how to conduct their work and themselves," Singh told this correspondent. "The last advice was recorded and still exists as Divya Upadesh (divine advice)." "On his death bed, the king told the people around him, I am a Magar king. When you face death, you dispense with pretence and speak the truth. The king's dying declaration is an indication that the Shah kings were not of blue blood." The advice was collected and published by a Catholic missionary who had come to Nepal in the 1960s, after the mystic land was gradually opened to foreigners. Father L.F. Stiller's book, "Prithvi Narayan Shah in the light of divya upadesh", had to be published from India's Bihar state in 1968 as, Singh says wryly, it would have been impossible to publish it in Nepal. Even Singh's book had to await the fall of King Gyanendra's absolute regime and the restoration of democracy. Singh points out a tradition that still remains in western Nepal as further proof. "The Shah kings' family deities - Goddess Manokamana and Gorkha Kali - have Magar priests," he says. "If you are a Rajput, you would not have a Magar priest." Matrimonial alliances also indicate the dynasty's humble stocks. "The Magar kings had the tradition of marrying the daughters of Tharu kings. Prithvi Narayan Shah himself married a Tharu princess called Kaushalyavati." Though the Tharus are the kinsmen of the Buddha, who came from a royal family, the tides of fate turned them into slaves who are now regarded as untouchables in Nepal. Later, the class-conscious Shah kings departed from the tradition and sought to marry Rajputs from India or the aristocracy in Nepal. When Nepal holds the historic first meeting of its constituent assembly Wednesday and formally proclaims the kingdom to be a republic, King Gyanendra, overnight reduced to a commoner, would have his forefathers' vanity to blame as much as his own overriding ambition. "The Shah kings completely forgot their roots," says Singh. "If they had remained true to their origin and kept themselves allied to the Magars, Tharus and Kirants, who form the majority, they would not have come to this pass," Singh said. "But they created fictitious genealogy and DNA and so, in the end, they had to face the dire consequences."

I also heard that Prithibi Narayan Shah married to Magar and were rooted from Magar families. So, heard that until Tribhuvan's time, Indian monarchs would not give their daughters to Shah princes, but after Shah started marrying to Rana families, who are chhetry, Indian monarch who were very weak/powerless in India also agreed to establish relationship with Nepali monarchy who had still some future as they were the head of the state.

BC it dosen't matter if you do not want to hear the truth. just leave from this thread. don't come poking your nose!!! sigh the revolution started from Gorkha and Lamjung, the home of Magar. Therefore no doubt "the famous Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa was the descendant of Magar Thapa family, as was also General Amar Singh Thapa"." If you are NOT happy why don;t you ask the author Singh who have after doing extensive report and research penned down this article. who are you? Just because the Nepal's history said that they were chettris thapa dosen't make any sense......... because nepal's history is EDITED and contains many false info. Many facts have been omiited. That's why the research is being done and make sure that this is not from ONE point if View but from every angle possible. also sigh tell me who wrote the history of Nepal? and which period? i can vaguely tell the people who wrote history of Nepal was the same people who create Caste system, the panchayat system, and so on! heroOFsajha

"If you are NOT happy why don;t you ask the author Singh who have after doing extensive report and research penned down this article. who are you?" I am not asking his credentials. But when I read the short information/news written by Mr. Singh, I did not find it very convincing. So, I was just presenting my views. Of course, I commend him for spending his time in researching and sharing the information. (For me, I'm still trying to figure out, how is it important to me or for my kids and future generation? Is it important to me? ... What difference is it going to make after knowing the history of the Shah dynasty? Maybe Mr. Singh's writings are authentic/not authentic like any other writers who chose to record the Nepali Hx. in the past.) All that I'm thinking right now is: It is very crucial for the writers, especially historians and writers who chose to write the truth, to be very truthful.
And then, what was "true" yesterday proves to be false today ... what is "true" today turns out to be false tomorrow. And, the never ending chain keeps on-going.
I do not know very much about hx. of Nepal, and I do not know what period its history was written.
How do you know Gorkha and Lamjung is home of Magars only? Even Newars reside in Gorkha. Are you reading many history books?

Note: 1. Prithvi Narayan Shah said "mangaratko rajaa mail bhaihale" in the context of different states around his state. But does that mean he is Magar? What if Kashmirko king says, "Kashmiri musalman ko raja mai bhaihale" or Obama says 'goraako raaja mai bhaihale'? 2. That military history guy omitted one thing: Trailokya's brother Narendra Shah--who is also mentioned in Setobagh. 3. The fact that Shah kings descended from Kulmandan Shah who was the king of Kaski also says that PN Shah may not be Magar. But who knows. Blood definitely mixed by now. 4. Btw, all Indian princes wanted to have marital relationship with Nepali kings. Until 1947, Nepali kings were the highest king in Indian subcontinent, not many states in India were as big as Nepal, and only Nepali king had a claim on sovereignty. More than that, husbands didn't even dare to beat Nepali princes married to India because Nepali kings could anytime use their power with British to punish them...

Bottom line is we all came from Africa. I went to National Geographic.com --> Genographic Project section and ordered a DNA kit for $100. Sent swab of my left & right cheek ... and in 2 months time, I got the detailed results. Basically this Genographic project is funded by IBM & National Geographic and they have collected DNA samples from every corner of the globe. They analyze your DNA, feed it in a computer and perform a match against a huge database of human genes. Scientific results don't lie. Science only deals with facts which can be proved. If you goto Atlas of the Human journey section, you can see detailed scientific analysis on where humans originally came from. BTW, if you believe God created humans, this research will not make sense to you. https://genographic.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html

sajhakohero brother, there is very unclear theory which says that kiratis r distinct race (which is true) n once mighty who ruled from afghanistan to cambodia along the foothills of himalayas. histories of kumaun, gadwal, etc also states that their first ruler of the lands were kiratis. Hazara tribes of afghanistan r also believed to b natives n related to kiratis but there r also another explanation that they were mongolian tribes who were left by genghis khan, thier facial features r of mongol. nagas, lepchas, assamese of india r beleived to b descendent of kriatis too. but in present kiratis denotes only rai, limbu, yakha, sunuwar, tribes of nepal. dhimal, koche, meche hav also made claimed of kirati descendent due to many similarities. in mahabharat, they hav mentioned about kiratis as people who ruled along the foothills of himalayas n precisely mentions the physical and facial features as of mongoloid in nature. it is a strong evidence to somehwat prove that hypothesis of kirats land of influence. also, there r many interesting stories about origin of deusi in kirati folklore, even though now it is known as one of the events in hindu festival tihar but the funny part is why dont the hindus in india or other regions do deusi n also bhai tika but remains as one of the unique celebration in nepal. also the tradition of eating taro ot tarul in maghe sakranti goes back to kirat period as a gesture n respect of how our ancestors survived before they knew the skills of harvesting. they r mentioned in kirati folklore. many scholar beleives it is possible that they hav been hinduinised to current form being the dominant and conventional religion but has brought uniqueness as nepalese festivals since many such celebrations r found to b none in hindus of other regions. if u r interested i can post sum of them right here.

Origin root history of Shah Dynasty of Nepal:- (must read) The former Nepal Shah Royal family of Nepal claims descent from the Sisodia, Rajasthan, India. Dynasty of Chittor, later ruling at Udaipur. Ajaya Simha established himself as Prince of Nayakot, Lambjang, Kaski, and Tanhun in ca. 1495. His successor, Jagdeva, conquered the principality of Kaski and was awarded the title of Shah from the Emperor of India during the sixteenth century.
Drabya Shah, great-grandson of Jagdeva, conquered Gorkha, establishing himself as the founder of the fortunes of the dynasty. His descendant, Prithvi Narayan, entered the Katmandu valley and defeated the Malla Dynasty, becoming King in 1768. His successors conquered all the remaining petty principalities and unified the kingdom.
Some historians believe the Magarto be their ancestors. However, the Bahun theocracy that sought to create a pan-Himalayan Hindu empire after their expulsion from Gangetic plains of India had every motive to ascribe supposed "upper caste" status to these Magar people of mid hill Nepal. Magar Tradition of making King:- The rulers of neighboring Kingdom of Gorkha were Magar people. They had a tradition of choosing a ruler every fall by way of a running match open to everyone. Whoever won the race was to become the ruler for a year. However, when Dravya Shah tricked his way to the win and eventually gotten away with the tradition of choosing a ruler every fall. He ruled with an iron fist and executed anyone who suggested the reinstatement of the very tradition of choosing a ruler by which he himself became a ruler.
Dravya Shah himself was not a physically robust man. He, however, had the backing of Bhattarai, Aryal, Adhikari & Acharya clan of Bahun to propel him to the throne by defeating Magar. Magar is an Sino-Tibetan peoples ethnic group of Nepal and northern India whose homeland extends from the western and southern edges of the Dhaulagiri section of the high Himalayas range south to the prominent Mahabharat foothill range and east aspirants to the throne by trickery and cheating instead of pure physical perfection as were the norm. Once he became the king. , however, he discontinued the race that was essential in Magar Magar is an Sino-Tibetan peoples ethnic group of Nepal and northern India whose homeland extends from the western and southern edges of the Dhaulagiri section of the high Himalayas range south to the prominent Mahabharat foothill range and east to anoint the ruler for the next year. By the time of his death in 1570, Dravya Shah had managed to erase the memory of the tradition of choosing the ruler by way of running match open to everyone. He was a shrewd politician, and with the backing of above mentioned clan of Bahun, he additionally sought the help of Pant clan of Bahun. He was a totalitarian king who ruled with iron fist to silence any dissent. He used the power and might of the Magar. Magar is an Sino-Tibetan peoples ethnic group of Nepal and northern India whose homeland extends from the western and southern edges of the Dhaulagiri section of the high Himalayas range south to the prominent Mahabharat foothill range and east army to increase the size of the kingdom to include some of the neighboring states. His successors continued to increase the kingdom's territory. King Drabya Shah (youngest son of King Yashobrahma Shah of Lamjung) defeated Khadkas of Gorkha and became the King of Gorkha. His 11th generation King PN Shah started the work of Unity. The remaining works of Unity was done by Bahadur Shah (youngest son of King PN shah). The main peoples to contribute and to spend their whole life for the unity of Nepal were: Bhimsen Thapa, Balbhadra Kunwar, Kalu Pade and others.
The 1st Shah king in the history of Nepal was Kulmandan Shah and he was king of Lamjung District. King Yashobrahma Shah the generation of Kulmandan Shah had two sons Narhari Shah and Drabya Shah. Narhari Shah became Crown Prince and the youngest son Drabya Shah was send to look the animals of the Royal Family. Slowly Drabya Shah also wanted to become a king. With his supporters he defeated Khadkas of Gorkha and became the king of Gorkha. After Drabya Shah became King of Gorkha his brother Narhari Shah did not like this and he kept the proposal of making Gorkha and Lamjung a single country but Drabya Shah rejected. There was always a war between Gorkha and Lamjung. Later the mother of the kings solved the problem between two brothers but the relation was not good between Gorkha and Lamjung.
Gorkha was strong than Lamjung. King Ram Shah the generation of Drabya Shah makes the Gorkha more famous by giving equal rights to all the peoples. King Narbhupal Shah had two sons. His 1st son died when he was a child and Prithivi Narayan Shan became Crown Prince of Gorkha.
Prithivi Narayan Shah became King of Gorkha in 1825 BS he started visiting different parts of Baise and Chaubise Rajya, he specially visited Kathmandu Valley. He was very clever also. He started thinking that if he wins Kathmandu Valley then business with Tibet can be expanded and Gorkha can be a rich. Then he started contributing small states and makes a single country. He 1st attack on Nuwakot but he was failed. In the third attack on Nuwakot he became success. Then he contributed Kathmandu Valley in Gorkha. King Prithivi Narayan Shah is known as 1st king of Nepal and he is symbol of UNITY. His life finished fighting with different small states. His son Bahadur shah continued the work of unity after the death of Prithivi Narayan Shah.
The other kings of Nepal were useless and they all enjoyed the power of king. The remaining work of Unity was done by Bhimsen Thapa, Balbhadra Kunwar, Amarsingh Thapa etc.

First some background based on recorded history. I remember this lesson from Nepali textbook Mahendra Mala called "Dudhko Manito" very vividly from grade four or five. The Ghales of Lig Lig Kot (present day Gorkha) had the custom of picking the king each year by crowning the winner of a marathon. The Ghales today are one of the four Gurung (Tamu) sub-tribe. But the Magars too have claimed that those Ghales were actually of Magar tribe. It has been a matter of dispute. But last time I heard of it some Magars went on to make a movie about the history of Lig Lig Kot race. Getting back to the story, during one of those races, came along Drabya Shah who was the younger brother of Narhari Shah, the King of Lamjung. Dyabya Shah told the Ghales that he wanted to participate in the race too. The Ghales naturally opposed but Drabya and his accomplices were very well-armed and stood assertive. The Ghales later agreed reluctantly. The caveat was that the deciding Ghales thought Drabya Shah was not a person who exuded tough physical strength so as to win the race. The wanna-be-Ghale-Kings had trained all year long by massaging their thighs with ghee. But whatever happened in truth, as they say history is written by the hand of the victor, Drabya Shah won the race. He was crowned the Ghale (Magar or Gurung whichever) King though he was not from either of the tribes. Before Drabya Shah the Ghale King had a limited term on the throne as indicated by the race. But Drabya Shah held onto power quite plausibly. When King Narhari Shah, Drabya Shah's elder brother came to know that Drabya had won a kingdom, he wanted it to be annexed to Lamjung. But Dyabya would not give in. Then an sibling enmity and a possible battle was on the brink. Upon hearing all of this their mother got really concerned. One day she devised a plan to settle the dispute between the brothers once and for all. She sent for both of her sons to show up at the brook that bordered Kingdom of Lamjung and Lig Lig Kot. Both respectfully obliged. Pouring some milk into the stream, the mother announced firmly to the warring sons that whoever of the brothers crosses the stream with a "plan of attack" will be in effect be desecreting a motherly wish of children living in harmony. Such is the story of the early days of Shah Kingdoms ship in historical Nepal. But who knows for sure what are facts versus what are fictions. This claim of Shah King having Magar ancestry was surfaced during the beginning of the end of Shah "Die Nasty". An intelligent question to ask at this juncture is: Who was this claim directed at? Of course the Magars!. Remember that the People's War started from western Nepal. The Magars inhabit most of the western districts of Nepal and consituted a vast majority of the Maoist soldiers. In essence, the claim was meant to make a rhetoric like why are Magar people going nuts by trying to dethrone their own Magar King?
