All sajhatis,

I have been working for a company after I finished my undergraduate last December. I didn’t get selected in H1B lottery and my employer is not enrolled in the E-verify program. My employer gave me some option like going to one of their overseas facilities, work there for 12 months, and come back again in L-1 visa. But I am considering going to graduate school rather than taking that L-1 path.

I spent some time searching for graduate schools, but I found that most of the good graduate schools don’t take graduate admission in spring semester, and their deadline for fall semester is long gone. Currently, I am in Minnesota and I did my BS in electrical and computer engineering with 3.95+ CGPA. I an wondering if you guys can suggest me a good graduate school (electrical or computer or software engineering) that takes the admission for spring 2009 semester and offers some sort of assistantship or scholarship.

Thanks you guys n gals. Appreciate your help.

Sumansuman, I contacted Purdue, and this is what they said..

“There is little to no funding available in spring.  Only in the form of a possible RA if a professor is looking to support someone.  No fellowships or TA's.”

I contacted few professors but they didn’t reply, so don’t know what to do. If you can help in anyway, I will really appreciate it.

Keystone,

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC)
does have spring intake option for graduate students. In case of you haven't written to any prof there, I would highly recommend you to do so. With your GPA, you should be able to make it through. Best of luck for GRE and grad school application.

More details:

Nepal ko chora, I emailed UIUC graduate admission office yesterday, but haven't heard anything back. Do you recommend writing directly to the profs? I mean do you know or familiar with any profs there? Thanks Nepal ko chora for your input.

Keystone,

I highly recommend you to write to the profs directly than writing to graduate admission office. It's the prof. who makes the final call. Rather than my familiarity to the profs, your correspondance to them matters more (I do know a few profs in the dept but I have no idea if they work in your area of interest). Be nice and impressive in your correspondance. Plz feel free to shoot me an email here in sajha if you want any more details. Good luck again !!

Some of my interest area include -- computer architecture, computer networking, wireless communication, wireless/mobile networking, wireless sensor networks, embedded software etc.. I will do some search on my own, but do you have any specific prof in mind that I should contact? Thanks again.

Thanks hyperthread for your suggestion. That's one of the last options I am considering. If possible I don't want to waste a semester.

Keystone,

If you are thinking of Purdue, chances are very slim to get a TA'ship for spring. To look for RA, try emailing the professors first (chances are most wont reply back, I had to go through that) and make sure to attach a tailored resume. The profs evaluate you more on your qualifications and skills. Which area are you interested in? Let me know.

University of Arizona

Get hold of a good professor depending on your area of research. You'll love it.

sorry for late response, was out of town.

once you get admission, you may get assistantship to another department. One of my friend has just left and his boss is asking him to recommend someone to work over there. GRE not required for MS in computer science.

shoot me an email to xtrazeny@hotmail.com

utosucks, that’s what I figured out too. Some of my interest area include -- computer networking, computer architecture, wireless communication, wireless/mobile networking, wireless sensor networks, embedded software etc. I am open to anything digital or software or wireless.

sunyataa, I will do that. Do you go there too?

1A2B3C, which department that assistantship is? I am planning to go for MSEE there. Do you know typically what kinda GRE score is required there? Appreciate your help.

If you guys go to one of the good graduate schools for Electrical or Computer or Software Engineering and can help me to get graduate (MS) admission and assistantship there, I will highly appreciate it.

I did my BS from USA and have very good GPA (3.95+). I can get strong recommendation from my professors and managers. I hadn’t have much time to prepare for GRE yet, anyway I am planning to take it around mid-august.

KEYSTONE

Software Engineering has nothing to do with Engineering School

Software Engineering falls under Computing Science....

CHOR, I guess it depends on which University. In any case, I don't care which deaprtment it falls under. My priority is CE then EE then SE.

Keystone,
I don't know the reputation of following unis for ur major but I believe they have Spring intake with generous funding:
1. University of Notre Dame
2. Georgia Institute of Technology
3. University of Toronto
4. George Washington University
5. Illinois Institute of Technology
6. City University of New York
7. University of Tennessee at Knoxville

Good Luck!
Why is your employer reluctant to enroll in e-verify program?

If u like circuits, go for circuit design (Analog or Digital) You won't have a trouble finding a job, especially with Analog. Apply on time, get an RA/TA

F22, I don’t know why exactly they are reluctant to enroll in e-verify program. They are saying they are assessing the feasibility of e-verify with their legal counsel. Most likely they won’t be enrolling in it, as the general practice in this company is, if you are not selected for H-1B they send you in one of their overseas facility (still in US payroll and benefits) for 12 months and after that they bring you back to the US in L-1 visa.

sunyataa, I don’t have too much interest in circuit design, especially I don’t like analog.

Thank you all for your information and suggestion. Hope to hear more.
